Secret Police

Liner Notes

So, first off, Abolish ICE. Let's get the 2026 version of Nuremberg trials going sooner than later.

And also, you do like political mid-80s pastiches sung by middle-aged Midwest dudes? Then this is the song for you. (This is ripping off a lot of my favorite artists, but mostly Madonna.)

Lyrically, this is inspired by a print of "First They Came" by Martin Niemöller I have in my office. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/First_They_Came

Musically, this is a ludicrous production, there are 30 damn tracks on this thing. It was a tremendous amount of fun to record. For the synth inclined, these are all from IK Multimedia's Syntronik, which has become one of my favorite synth collections.

Imprison ICE. It’s important that we don’t see ICE as an anomaly. It is an embodiment of US practices. Enjoy.

Lyrics

Oh No Oh No The Secret Police are gonna take me away Oh No Oh No The Secret Police are gonna take me away

I didn't think Didn't think they'd ever ever come for me

I didn't think Didn't think they'd ever ever come for me

Oh No Oh No (They're gonna getcha) The Secret Police are gonna take me away Oh No Oh No (They're gonna getcha) The Secret Police are gonna take me away

I didn't think that this was a problem Til they knocked down my door

I just assumed they had their reasons Taking criminals we'd ignore

But what did I do? I'm just here living my life Now the Secret Police tell me I'm on a list Of people someone doesn't like

I didn't think Didn't think they'd ever ever come for me

I didn't think Didn't think they'd ever ever come for me

Oh No Oh No (They're gonna getcha) They got me now They got me now And now I'll disappear The Secret Police are gonna take me away

Oh No Oh No (They're gonna getcha) They got me now They got me now And now they'll make me disappear The Secret Police are gonna take me away

So catchy and fun and frustrating and sad all at once that it needs to be made. I'm a sucker for a 30 track song. Really love all the layers in this.

This needs to be released ASAP. This needs to be on MTV. Except that MTV doesn't exist anymore. I caught a bit of Miami sound machine in the whole vibe.

Hell yeah. Love this so much. This Billy ocean joins a commune with randy Newman and started a flipping revolution! This is one of my favorite songs this year fawm or otherwise! Love it love it love it.

This is my absolute favorite kind of song (although I wish they didn't have to exist, but alas here we are). Catchy and upbeat with a darker story or important message. As songwriters, I think it's also a responsibility for us to reflect the times in which we live, and this does so 100%!

The first 30s of this are ridiculously cheerful. Oh, wait, the entire tune is! Layered chords! Poom, poom, poom electronic tom fills! It's all delightful! Well, apart form the obvious... 😬

All I can say is YES. I always love love love a song that is upbeat but if you listen to the lyrics it is about a hard topic. Fantastic. Abolish ICE

It sounds so fun, but that feels an inappropriate descriptor for a song tackling this topic. Abolish ICE indeed!

Oh wow - this is such strong 80s synth pop! I love all the layers you have going on. Everything sounds great. And the pop joy belies the serious message of the lyric.

Abolish ICE!

Well done!

I'm also getting some Peter Gabriel. I liked it a lot and hey, apparently David Hasselhof's music was key to bringing down the Berlin wall (according to him at least) so who knows? I especially liked the abrupt ending in the middle of a wo

Damn...this is infectious, joyous, and terrifying at the same time. Never thought I'd live to see the day where Niemöller-inspired synthpop would be a necessity, but here we are. What a damn world...and a fun track!

2026 Weird Al goes politic. Sign me up!

Pros: The hook is crazy good Cons: What you do think about the tempo? Something feels spot on, but could also use some speeding up maybe?

It’s me. I’m the guy you’re talking in the liner notes. Fellow midwesterner, 35, nostalgic. This friggin slaps and is just exploding dopamine and serotonin and probably some leftover acid through my dumb brain. I love it. It’s epic!
