Liner Notes

A bit of #ukulele #protest of the form I swore I wouldn't do, but here we are. If only these people had been around when I was young it would have saved me from being who I am today... Heaven forbid that anyone get the opportunity to learn who they are, or, indeed, anything else.

Lyrics

They are thinking of the children and not a day too soon They'll save a generation from a horrifying doom Their motives must be pure and the mission's understood When the books the kids are reading cannot do them any good

Well I wish when I was little they had done the same for me I wish that I'd been saved by those who try to set us free Because of all the things I read, I'll never be the same By now I am regretting all the things that I became

A wizard and a sorceror, a murderer, a thief A hungry caterpillar munching on a tasty leaf A rabbit on the run with other rabbit refugees A hobbit in the wilderness who's talking to a tree

If they'd handled this one sooner I'd have had a better life I'm living in a shoe now with a fairy for a wife If I didn't disappear every time I wore my ring Perhaps you'd all believe that I'd become all of these things

A wizard and a sorceror, a murderer, a thief A hungry caterpillar munching on a tasty leaf A rabbit on the run with other rabbit refugees A hobbit in the wilderness who's talking to a tree

I'm a kid with wings of wax who was desperate to fly higher A steam train that was conscious singing in the village choir A fire breathing dragon who'd abduct the prince's daughter And a man who hitched a lift aboard a passing flying saucer

A wizard and a sorceror, a murderer, a thief A hungry caterpillar munching on a tasty leaf A rabbit on the run with other rabbit refugees A hobbit in the wilderness who's talking to a tree

I guess I too should have been saved from all those adventures. I could have been normal. And boring. And lacked creativity. Just like THEY want us to be. And we would never have met.

The message comes through loud and clear, but rather than feeling preachy it's just darling :) love the shout-out to the very hungry caterpillar I loved that book so much

This was definitely the smile that I needed tonight! An extremely clever idea and the style and chord changes totally capture the folkiness of the music from my youth! (I can almost hear Burl Ives singing the chorus!) I certainly hope that not all these books have been banned...

this is such a hilarious idea..that we could actually become all the characters in the stories we have read. but in a sense we do adopt the characteristics of many literary characters. my favorite line here is 'a hungry caterpillar munching on a tasty leaf' maybe because i read that book to my daughter so many times.

I was grinning like an idiot through this whole thing - thank you - this made my coffee taste even better.

Ha ha this is very good! god forbid , creativity and fantasy should be ingrained in our young minds! we have all been ruined

I love it. Sarcastic protest songs are a fine tradition and if they're not, they should be. I'm not sure the types who ban books for children really get sarcasm but hopefully this kind of message might reach those who can still use their brains.

@aeye

The callout of all the books in the chorus is such a clever chorus. Definitely read all of those growing up.
