After a few fits and starts, here's my first offering. GarageBand was giving me fits on a song I spent several days on, so I put it aside, and then this came out. Sometimes it works that way!
This is a well-known story, especially if you've ever had a children's bible or gone to Sunday School. We won't go into whether or not it is an actual historical event. Can't prove it one way or the other, but it is a good tale (possibly a whale of a tale??).
Lyrics
Vs1 The Lord came to Jonah, son of Ammitai He was a prophet of Israel in those trying times The Lord said “Go to Ninevah, for their evil is great. I’m tired of their wickedness, their lies, and their hate”
Vs 2 But Jonah got up, and from God’s presence he ran He found a ship going to Tarshish, he was a cowardly man Now the Lord doesn’t take “no” very kindly, indeed And sent a great storm to churn up the sea
Chorus- Hey Jonah, you should have heeded your call Hey Jonah, you’re a lesson for us all!
Vs 3 When the sailors found out about the cause of this harm They threw Jonah over, and guess what, the sea became calm Jonah was lucky, as a great fish was swimming by And swallowed him whole, so Jonah stayed alive
Vs 4 He languished for three days in the bowels of that fish He was rocked and he was rolled; he was pummeled and pitched Until he was thrown up on Ninevah’s distant shore Which proves you should never, ever say no to the Lord
Chorus- Hey Jonah, you should have heeded your call Hey Jonah, you’re a lesson for us all!
Bridge- Now the rest of the story is easy to tell When Jonah preached to the Ninehvites, on their faces they fell God’s mercy and love were poured out on the city that day And repentance kept God’s judgement away
Vs 5 So the moral of this story is two-fold, I’d say When the Lord makes a request, it’s good to obey And when God touches your heart with mercy and grace It’s a very good thing to fall on your face.
Chorus- Hey Jonah, you should have heeded your call Hey Jonah, you’re a lesson for us all!

That's really nice piano, Deb; makes me think of the Randy Newman style, perfect for light-hearted story telling. The story is serious, but the way you tell it makes it charming.
Your storytelling vocal is lovely and compelling, and the piano rolls along wonderfully. Excellent, vivid lyrics, too. I thoroughly enjoyed being along for the ride on this musical tale!
Really well told bible story! Flows so beautifully! The verses do such a good job revealing the story and its dual meaning and the contrast with the simple and chorus.
Thanks, Liz! It's nice to have one in the books!
Beautiful theatre/ stage show song 🎵 Catchy, warm and so gorgeous. Your singing and playing are superb 👌 👏 🎵✨️🎶🌷
