The Screams

Liner Notes

On the Seasons of the Ukulele we have a very talented artist who lives in Tasmania. Her name is Joo and she is the host of this week's "Season".

As she's very much a visual person, she suggested that this week our songs should be inspired by some of her artwork, which she displayed on our forum.

I was struck by this one of a weird looking family and came up with this song this morning in the waiting room in a Hospital in Barcelona where my partner was having a minor (successful) operation.

Lyrics

LYRICS & CHORDS (Guitar players use Capo 5) INTRO: (C) (D) (Em)

(Em) Our new next door neighbours are a (D) weird (Em) bunch Like the worst imaginings of your (D) dreams They (Em) all share a face that (D) gives us the (Em) creeps That's (C) why we have (D) called them "The (Em) Screams"

Re(G)member that guy standing (A) on a (Em) bridge A (C) swirl of colour (A) lacking a sun (Em) beam (Em) Turning in horror to (D) look out at (Em) us His (C) face distorted (D) in an endless (Em) scream

(Em) The Screams next door, we've (D) never seen (Em) smile There's little in their behaviour that re(D)deems On (Em) Sundays they all walk out in a (D) single (Em) file They (C) obviously (D) have a tight re(Em)gime

They (G) go down to our church but they (A) sit like (Em) stones And (C) never join in (A) any of the (Em) hymns We've seen more life in (D) video (Em) games They're more (C) human in that (D) old one called "The (Em) SIMS"

(Em) We can only speculate what they (D) do at (Em) home If they have a hobby that their needs ful(D)fils Their (Em) kids are schooled by their (D) mother at (Em) home We (C) wonder what Dad (D) does to pay the (Em) bills

We're (G) so freaked out by this (A) creepy (Em) lot We're (C) contemplating (A) if we ought to (Em) move The (Em) air in our home you could (D) cut with a (Em) knife We can't (C) stand this gloomy (D) atmosphere of (Em) doom

Amazingly creative musical work derived from a picture! You, Sir, have a brilliantly vivid imagination. It's the first time I've heard a guitalele and what a great example of what it can do. The whole song flows so nicely.

Great performance! I never had a chance to try guitalele, happy to see it in action. Such witty soundtrack to the art.

This is great Berni, I love the way you say it as you see it. I write a piece on my friends Yamaha guitalele yesterday. It’s an interesting instrument and coloured the song I was writing. Different instruments do that though.

Love the sound of that guitalele! The chord changes fit the mood nicely. Great imagination of your friend's artwork. Akin to "What's He Building in There" by Tom Waits

Plenty of them neighbours around, thankfully we have great ones. Even ask me to play louder sometimes. Nice bounce to the song!

What a fun take on the picture. You’ve given them true character and fleshed out a complete story.

This is a hilarious song. It's Shel Silverstein-esque in it's playfulness I think, and I hope you don't take that as an insult. I was thoroughly delighted listening to it.

I love that the artwork could also be the family looking at the Screams and being freaked out. Or maybe the Screams are being freaked out by you!

Absolutely astounding how you got all that from one piece of artwork. Your storytelling never fails to keep me entertained and mesmerised. Awesome melody and performed perfectly. Lovely work
