Lyrics

Antiedam (the Battle of Sharpsburg)

V I Saddled up, Lem, Clem and me heading for Antietam (An teed um) Heard it's thousands lead by Lee and northern men are needed

We are farmers regular men Not Regulars, sworn and sealed of gun, sword and shield Now killers of brothers, to what end Fire and die in a southern cornfield

V II Heard Lee set three divisions, and a couple 'a corp 55,000 long guns, perhaps a little bit more That's a lot of rebel yelling lead fly'n through the air We're a quick report to McClellan Our return's not nearly as clear

C Sky broke open, a reign of cannon and lead, Raging storm of 12 hours, 23,000 dead God’s stomach was soured, shaking his head

Would have been better with a few boxing matches Instead of the lead and long Brown-Bess pan flashes

V III I went down instantly Lain in the grass for all to see Half day later they littered me Back behind the line

Cleanly sliced, flesh to the bone High-pitched screaming, never a moan Doc sharpened his saw, set to his work 5 or 6 strokes, my leg fell to the dirt

C Skies broke open, reign of cannon and lead, Raging storm of 12 hours, 23,000 dead God’s stomach was soured, shaking his head

Would have been better with a few boxing matches Instead of the lead and long Brown-Bess pan flashes

Well laid out. An unflinching look back. A few years back, we visited Sharpsburg - spent a couple days at the battle field. (it's also a nice base for the C&O Canal Trail - where many fewer have died)

Beautiful. I love the first two lines of the chorus. The sky breaking open feels so really with the images that come after. Nicely done

Brutally vivid, as intended. Love the specific details and the pacifist twist about boxing matches.

Damn. This is heavy stuff. Such powerful imagery.

I don't live too far from Antiedam and have been several times. It is quite powerful to stand on the ground and see how beautiful it is, knowing how many lives were lost there in such a short amount of time. Nice lyrical work including so much of the story and structuring it so well. Such vivid imagery. Your chorus is a standout.

"5 or 6 strokes, my leg fell to the dirt" there is some excellent battlefield poetry in here.
