#singersongwriter #guywithguitar True story, came across a newspaper today from 1989, co-incidentally the year we got married. News wise, you'd be hard pressed to tell the difference between then and now

Lyrics

Do you remember how it used to be Way back when things were simpler Do you remember the day I dropped to one knee And you gave a positive answer to the question

I saw a paper today, from the end of the eighties And nothing much seems to have changed There was war in the middle east, planes were still crashing from the sky And we read about celebrities, now deceased

And prices were similar, though the currency changed And people were feeling the pinch But we struggled through, and I’m glad I have you Wouldn’t trade you for column inches

And the paper was larger and the paper was thicker Not at all how they are today But other than that, not much has changed Only the heroes and villains rearranged

Crazy how times change. And yet, don't. When I listened, I remembered the day I proposed, in summer 2007. A sunny day. We fetched our rings together from the jeweller. It was not a surprise proposal, we had already been together for 10 years. At at an ice-cream parlor - now closed down - we chanced upon my grandmother - who died some weeks ago at age 90. We couldn't help grinning all the time and she must have thought we were crazy. Those are the important memories in life. Not the random news. It's weird that the newspapers got thinner, and yet, somehow that's okay with me. Thanks for this journey!

Ooh the chords at "and the paper was larger..." so musically interesting! Great arrangement here. I too wonder if anything will ever change. I was a child of the 80s and remember it being simple, but then again, I was simple too. Maybe it's always been this way and I just didn't realize it.

when the main difference between 1989 and today is that newspapers are smaller and the paper quality has dropped, it says a lot about the world we still live in. great write, and such a a fab inspiration/song seed finding that newspaper!

Very well said and performed. "The more things change the more they stay the same." Great hook, turning the story around and bringing out the love-song aspect. Thanks for sharing.
