Day Three - New Year's Day

So I was watching some youtube (Chris Sprago, to be precise) and I learnt about the Wolfenden Gap (https://api.parliament.uk/historic-hansard/commons/1961/apr/28/sport-wolfenden-committees-report , should you be a massive government documentation nerd) that was defined in the 60's in the UK as the gap between physical exercise of children and adults, which alone lead to the creation of Leisure Centres throughout the UK). That coupled with an interesting (to me) fact that most New Year's Resolutions are abandoned by the 9th Jan (though god knows how that is validated) led to this song.

Lyrics

Who’d’ve ever thought that I would get this fat? Adulthood’s a trap - blame the Wolfenden Gap

Let’s go to the gym To see the New Year in And to get win-thin For the year that’s coming

Put the Manger Things aside, Time to get into your stride, Drag your flabby ass outside To show off some New Year’s Pride

Go to gym over lunch While you’re there, work out a bunch You signed up for a whole 12 months, you’re Losing interest up front

How much will they make From all us work-out fakes? How much will they take From bank accounts of gym boy flakes?

Put the Manger Things aside, Time to get into your stride, Drag your flabby ass outside, To show off some New Year’s Pride

Just go outside Go to the gym 'Til January the Ninth When you will give in

"Put the Manger Things aside"; I'm not sure why this line made me laugh so much. These lyrics are kinda sad. Gotta say, this is NOT very relatable. I've never set foot in a gym in my life and never plan to. I'm happy to sit here on the couch. Nice one.

Me, neither! The "Manger Things" line was a pun on the release of Stranger Things" Season 5 on Netflix around the time this song is set,; but I couldn't work out a line to follow it that flowed into the rest of the chorus. Yes, it is sad! Glad that came across to someone! j$

Relatable.

Thanks, but that's a word I personally hate. Nothing relatable about me, I hope! j$

Excellent from start to finish! And very, very relatable! You killed it!

Hi Paul, great to hear you again and this doesn't disappoint. Very relateable. As for your commments on a sense of self, it wasn't meant to be a sad one, but what can I do? As well as a tvps ref at the end, the third verse was a big clue if you read it acrostically. I've said too much! Happy Fawming sir!

I love the instrumentation on this one and how it grows and changes. Very relatable, especially that ending! Nice one!
