Made Up Words
Challenge: MADE-UP WORDSLiner Notes
Got a lot of family stuff on my mind this week as I process the fact that my last living grandparent (my Mom's mom) will probably be shuffling off this mortal coil soon. The last time I lost a grandparent was over 6 years ago, when my Mom's dad passed away...but really, I'd lost him long before that, and not because of his dementia. This song is about him.
Kind of a sideways take on the weekly challenge, but it's where my brain went this morning so I went with it.

Lyrics
You wouldn't call me by my name Acknowledge I existed You said that I had made it up And needed God's assistance To recover the salvation You were certain I had lost In the eyes of your religion Joy wasn't worth the cost
But we are made of made up words The language we create To find common understanding And even though you hate it when Some words are unfamiliar And you fear what you don't know We invent the definitions For what's written on our souls
You thought that I had shut you out So I could live in sin You didn't understand why I Would walk away from kin Couldn't see it wasn't me Who chose to do the leaving All I'd ever asked of you Was that you would believe me
'Cause we are made of made up words The language we create To find common understanding And even though you hate it when Some words are unfamiliar And you fear what you don't know We invent the definitions For what's written on our souls

Very emotional and moving. I appreciate the hard honesty in this song, and your delivery has a quiet power to it. My dad passed away right before FAWM, so I can relate to your situation. Sometimes family situations can be hard and complex. I hope writing this song helped. It was wonderful to listen to.
Yes, definitely...honest, raw and moving.
Vibe well captures the pain, grief, sadness of such a difficult experience. Vulnerable, raw, and honest. The lyrics in the chorus are epecially beautiful, poetic, and poignant. Thanks for sharing!
Honest and very raw. I'm sorry you had this experience.
I love this interpretation of this week’s theme - “we are made of made up words” - so true!!! We do invent the definitions!
Honest and striking. This hit hard, "But we are made of made up words, The language we create" - so true. THIS is an interesting take on the challenge. Hugs to you, friend.
this is so stark and beautiful. i resonate very strongly with the lyrics, having had similar experiences with my family. and i think the out-of-the-box way you chose to approach the challenge is really cool, too!
You sure are taking on some tough stuff! You really do do it well, i hope it at least helps a little. You have such a great delivery style for such topics, you cant make up that emotion .
So moving, creative and beautiful.
Wow, there's so much emotion in your music. I especially like the lyrics of the chorus; the train of thought is so beautiful.
I understand what you’re going through, my mum is dying too, and even though we reconciled there’s a lot of closure I’m never going to get.
“ Couldn't see it wasn't me Who chose to do the leaving All I'd ever asked of you Was that you would believe me”
This hit really hard, i really admire the directness, addressing the pain, it adds to the beauty of what you’ve created here
oof! "we are made of made up words" is genius (and that whole B section is brilliant). and "In the eyes of your religion/Joy wasn't worth the cost" is powerful. Amazing and beautiful. (and also such cool techniques here, like where the rhymes fall in the line . . .) wow.
Oh Alyx this is beautiful use of the weekly challenge! such a gorgeous sentiment to remind us all that we are all made up of made up words!
Beautiful work. Its hard to say goodbye to someone who already isn't quite there.
Awww, friend. Hugs. Love, love, love the way you talk about language in this. It's so true. "We are made of made up words" gorgeous sentiment. Thank you for sharing. Love the gentle melody and the soft guitar. Really beautiful sonic mood to go with the words.
beautiful lyrics and very relevant. melancholic and atmospheric <3
Ok but your use of the prompt is artistic and brilliantly authentic.
Having also been rasied by family who don't understand any other equation than "the family is the most important thing, to the exclusion of anything else" ... I am definitely finding a way into your song from my experiences, too. Thanks for this.
Musical and emotional. Really well done.
