Liner Notes

Inspired by the weather* and having to shovel a foot of snow off my sidewalk, car, and the space between where my car is parked and where the plows actually cleared.

*when I write songs about the weather, I am also writing songs about Everything Else. You can probably guess what facet of Everything Else this one is about.

#folk #bluesy #acapella #protest #winter #political

Lyrics

When the snow falls down get out your shovel when the snow falls down get out your shovel when the snow falls down and covers the town you better get out your shovel now

Chorus: So dig down and dig in oh the winter's not gonna win we'll be digging down with our neighbors and friends until the winter is gone again

When the cold wind howls sing out louder when the cold wind howls sing out louder when the cold wind howls from the stormy clouds you better sing out loud and proud

When the ice appears get out your whistle when the ice appears up get out your whistle when the ice appears to bring chaos and fear you better throw them out on their ears

You have such an expressive voice that I can imagine the instrumental. It will be big, bluesy, jazzy, brasses. Or maybe just an acoustic guitar having super nice licks.

I love the variety of songs you're putting out (and fast!). A sort of spiritual about winter woes and so much more that is seriously wrong these days! I'm absolutely "digging in" to EVERYTHING you've imparted with this! Have to just shout out too that you have such a nice voice :)

Ahh thank you so much! Yeah I have really run a wide range of songs so far haha, very fun to just try a lot of things this month.

This is great! This feels perfect for singing along to - it has the blues chant sort of feel that is easy to pick up and the way the lyrics are structured builds perfectly. It made me want to clap along too.

Excellent work!

Thank you! I always hope people will be able to sing along, so it's good to hear it's working for that. :)

I like where this lives, in a space where folk and blues meet. The winter metaphor works great.

Thank you! I had a hard time picking genre tags for this one, it really does live right in the middle somewhere.

This is beautiful! Your voice is great. Brave and sweet. This sounds like an ancient workers song!

[pic]

Thank you so much! I spend a lot of time singing old work songs so this is a great compliment, keeping the tradition alive. :)

clever, subtle, and brave lyrics (and you're brave for recording acapella too! always so nervewracking for me to do but wow you sound amazing đŸ’–) thankyou for sharing

[pic]

Thank you so much! Honestly singing a capella is almost less stressful for me than playing an instrument, because I'm still so new at playing. I thought about trying to figure out chords for this one but decided at least for now it's better like this. I'm glad you like it!

So powerful (and so subtle). I enjoyed singing along and can instantly imagine how great this will sound when sung by a group of people.

[pic]

Oh this is so wonderful to hear! Most of the music stuff I do irl involves getting a whole group to sing, so it's great to know I've made a song that will work for that. :)

Nice melody! Very sing-alongable. And the lyric draws the parallels without being heavy-handed about it.

[pic]

Thanks! Very happy to hear it works for singing along, that's one of the best compliments I could receive. And yes, it's one of those things where like...the parallels write themselves, but I want to make sure it also stands as a good piece of songwriting, you know? So I'm glad it worked!

Fantastic stuff. I love how the last verse removes any doubts about what this is about. The bare a cappella sounds so good and powerful! Shovels at the ready. :)

[pic]

Aww thank you! Yeah the initial inspiration for it really was just "I have to go shovel a foot of snow off my car" but I've been noticing that what should be minor inconveniences (like weather) feel a lot bigger right now because of everything else. So that connection is something I've been incorporating into my songs when I can.

[pic]

I appreciate how this is stripped to its essence—it’s easy to forget just how powerful that can be! Also digging the twist near the end!

[pic]

Thank you! I had considered trying to figure out some instrument backing, but in the end it seemed best this way. I'm glad you like it!

A great change of pace with the acapella! Classic arrangement. Very traditional sounding.

Thank you! I was on the fence about doing it a capella, but based on the response I think I made the right call. :)
