Go Down Singin'

by @rvaross

Liner Notes

A little tune inspired by the weather, the beginning of this year in general, and "28 Years Later" (which I watched last night). It's so sad and hard out there, but there's so much beauty. Glad to be singing my way through it, and glad to be doing it with a creative community. My first time participating in FAWM. So looking forward to what everyone will share.

Lyrics

It’s getting late, should we stop here for the night? You make the tent and I’ll get wood for the fire We won’t solve a thing if we just talk too much tonight But I’d sing a song if you oblige

And we got a guitar and we know three or four chords If this is the end of the world, guess we’ll go down singin' And the night is so cold but the stars are beautiful If this is the end of the world, guess we’ll go down singin'

Always thought that it would end when the bombs dropped Or maybe when the waters rose above Never guessed we’d hate until we were all little fires We’d rather burn it down than learn to love

But we got a guitar and we know three or four chords If this is the end of the world, guess we’ll go down singin' And the night is so cold but the stars are beautiful If this is the end of the world, guess we’ll go down singin'

And we still got a voice They haven’t figured out how to take that from us yet so we go down singin' And we’re standing up, broken hearts still pumping blood If this is the end of the world, guess we’ll go down singin'

Morning light I wake up and I look out A silhouette standing in the sun What if you’re the kind they keep warning me about Should I pack it up and start to run

But we got a guitar and we know three or four chords If this is the end of the world, guess we’ll go down singin' And the morning’s cold but the sun is beautiful If this is the end of the world, guess we’ll go down singin'

I love how you turned it hopeful in the second half. Catchy as always, love love love the harmonies and the ooohs!

Your harmonies have such a warm quality to them, even when the lyrics are brutally honest. Love the descending oooohs as you go down singin'...

Lovely song bud. And how does your voice always sound so damn radio-ready?

[pic]

Such an awesome refrain -- and those OOOHS right after are downright divine. Can't wait to see / hear this one live!

[pic]

hell yes.... you're off and running with this. i'll go down singing with you

Those ooohs are going to be stuck in my head for the forseeable future.

[pic]

So warm and comforting and the chorus layering makes it feel like you're in a room of everyone singing to comfort each other. Great work.

I love a reference to songwriting within the song

From one infant fawmling to another, really beautiful.💗

A really great song with a beautiful sentiment. And hey, at least it's not 28 Years Later! (yet)

Wow welcome to FAWM! I love love love your harmonies and sense of effective melodic phrasing. I’d put this on a playlist as-is!

yessss this is so cozy omg, I absolutely love the vocal stack you’ve got going on here, the mix is so lush, I dig it! 😁

This is so beautiful, I love the hints of piano and the harmonies. “If this is the end of the world, guess we’ll go down singin’” is such an amazing hook and central idea (and very much how it feels in this weather!)

Aaaw, it is very sweet and you have a good voice. You know that all that music is going to attract the zombies though? I think this would go well in a Sweet Tooth episode.

Such a lovely song Ross, and something so needed for today. It reminds me of Joshua Radin’s music a little. The line “never guessed we’d hate until we’re all little fires / we’d rather burn it down than learn to love” is killer. Well done!!

Yesss — so glad you’re here, Ross!

Ya know I love a bittersweet take on existential dread! Pretty perfect, sir.

Oh yeah classy harmonies indeed. I like that little piano line hiding in there as well!! very complete and meaningful lyric. A timeless style very well delivered

I’m moved by the concept of going down singing. I can totally imagine it.

[pic]

finding it hard to see but there is beauty right here beautiful in construction and delivery

So good! For all the reasons I love, your chorus vocal arrangement reminds me of Iron & Wine. Great message delivered earnestly and with style.

Those vocal harmonies are reminiscent of CSNY. Well constructed song. Beautifully done!

This is a really amazing song. I love the layering of the vocals, all clear and concise, the perfect balance of guitar and keys (nothing overpowering), and its so vibrant. As for the lyrics, I love how the beginning is just like a feel good sing-along that gradually becomes more thought provoking as the song progresses. Keep up the awesome work!

Ross: Great voice for folk! and the harmonies are good. Great chorus...go down singing. (good line!) Nice change on last chorus! very well done. Bravo.

I like the ambient background, cute opening, and when the piano and harmonies break in it opens up beautifully. Really lovely vocal performance, had my head nodding away. Great piano lines as the second chorus swells. And the sparse third verse is really delicate. Really cool song, great performance
