Liner Notes

#skirmish #sharpobjects #lyricsonly #singersongwriter #needsmusic I started out with the idea that sharp objects (like wit, for example) don't work on dull people. Which inevitably went political, having watched people who know (or should know) better applying the wrong tools. Blunt objects when a scalpel was needed. It's not finished, but I'll post it anyway with the hope that when it's paired to music, it will sound less preachy. Still undecided about whether to go folk-rock with this, or maybe try Death Metal. Which is the proper tool here?

Lyrics

PROPER TOOL

VERSE 1 What tools do you reach for when challenged to fight? Those that are handy or those that are right? Do you take a deep breath and think things through Before wielding a hammer to pound in a screw What you really need is the proper tool

You can’t trim your lawn by swinging an axe You can’t fell a tree with broken glass Cutting remarks will never slice through Minds filled with ignorance brains turned to goo What you really need is the proper tool

CHORUS Tariffs aren’t cure-alls just taxation Lowering interest rates won’t fix inflation Outlawing hunger doesn’t cure starvation But some people were never taught to use tools.

VERSE 2 Doors will unlock if you have the right key Battering rams are rarely necessary Bread and tomatoes need serrated knives Respect and dignity better our lives Have you matched the right tool to the situation

BRIDGE: A compass for places you never been The right detergent to get things clean A quiet word when egos collide But you might have to swallow your pride….

FINAL VERSE: A sharpened blade for the tangled vines Watch the canaries when entering mines When the house is dark, strike a light Don’t blame the shadows for hiding the night What you really need is the proper tool

Outro: Choose the right tool make it easy on everyone Let’s choose the right tools for what we need

Wow, clever! 🤯 Love the idea, and the execution!

So much to unpack in these lyrics and some very fine lines too. Would really like to hear it set to music. Good work

I like the message of strategy and system over haste. The methodical pacing supports the argument but ironically might not reach those who are mentally trying to jump ahead to the chorus. All in all, though, a reassuring feeling in the lyrics.
