Liner Notes

#acoustic #country

I'm still working in "trad country" mode. I like the hook; otherwise I'm not sure about whether something is missing. The unresolved end of verses is deliberate, but should there be more to the music transitioning to the chorus? Do we need a third verse, possibly a where-do-I-go-from-here thing?

Decisions, decisions....

Lyrics

I’ve never been a fan of geography, How it keeps people apart Most of those road signs should use years to measure The distance between heart and heart Too late for changing Too soon for regret

I see you off on your life’s next adventure Hoping it turns out just right Waving goodbye as your taxi is leaving, I fall in love at last sight. I fall in love at last sight.

If I’d looked closer the first time I saw you Perhaps we’d have been a cliché. But I was a shoulder through new loves and breakups When you needed someone to stay. Too young to promise Too old to deceive

I see you off on your life’s next adventure Hoping it turns out just right Waving goodbye as your taxi is leaving, I fall in love at last sight. I fall in love at last sight.

Waving goodbye as your taxi is leaving, I fall in love at last sight. Lost in the fading tail lights I fall in love at last sight.

Lovely. No need for more story/another verse. But I have one suggestion, based on your question:

The unresolved end of verses is deliberate, but should there be more to the music transitioning to the chorus?

In that unresolved space, you have a bassline pedalling between G D G D while holding on a G arpeggio: / : . . : . . : . . : . . / |-------------------------| |-------------------------| |-------------------------| |-------0-----------0-----| |-------------------------| |-3-----------3-----------| / : . . : . . : . . : . . / I wonder about a transition phrase going from G into the next Am. Depending on how much dissonance sits well in your ear, the prettier possibility might be: / : . . : . . : . . : . . / |-------------------------| |-------------------------| |-------------------------| |-------0-----------------| |-------------------3---2-| |-3-----------3-----------| / : . . : . . : . . : . . / while a crunchier possibility might be: / : . . : . . : . . : . . / |-------------------------| |-------------------------| |-------------------------| |-------0-----------------| |-------------------------| |-3-----------3-----2---3-| / : . . : . . : . . : . . / There are certainly other ways to go, as well. But simply holding your existing G D G D is perfectly fine. If you make an adjustment (whatever it is), let me know; I'd love to hear it.

(I also have another suggestion, but it isn't related to anything you asked about in your liner notes.)

Thanks. I'll play around with your suggestions and see how they work out.

I'm open to suggestions, generally. I learned long ago to pay attention to parts of any work that caused friction in others, even if I decided not to adopt the proposed fix.

I was thinking about your feature line, that by delivering "last sight" in such quick succession, the listener hears "lassite". It's solved by delivering them with some space between (allowing the "t" of "last" to close), but then the question is whether to just delay "sight" by half-a-beat (or more), or to rephrase the whole line.

In my own songs, I find the prospect of troubleshooting like this to be exciting.

As a fan of traditional country, I give this one a big thumbs-up! Concise writing - no need at all for a third verse. And your guitar and vocal are brilliant as usual.

This is a sad song but definitely hits the right kind of lonely for a country song.

All I know about country is Ibthink you are suppoded to use G7 chords.

It is indeed a heck of a great hook line though.

Really fine write, Phil. I think you've nailed it structurally, so I would add or subtract a thing. The hook line is dynamite.

@val

Great way to flip the cliche. That makes a perfect country song. Nice sounding guitar picking too. I like that!

I think the song is complete as it is, Phil. Don't mess with success! I particularly like the hook line from your chorus, "I fall in love at last sight." It's a great twist on the usual "love at first sight".
