You Can Be Brave

Liner Notes
So clearly I have a memory like a fish! Forgot that I already used some of these chorus these lyrics in an earlier song this FAWM. But I guess they just spurred a sister song. And a new mantra for our daughter who has been struggling with school drop offs in her first year of schooling. Lots of tears and difficulty letting go of me at bell time, ready to go home. A real heart breaking moment that had me crying all drive home yesterday. So this was quite a cathartic write, and after showing Juni the song thismorning she was keen to add some vocals. So I hope it was helpful for both of us to process what she/we're going through. She was riffin' lyrics I hadn't even anticipated!
I could likely do with cutting some of the lengthy verses, but lyrics don't usually come easy for me, so I guess I had more to say than usual and let it flow!
#ballad #pop #piano #soul I had a right challenge tuning everything down about half a semitone to get it to work with our out of tune piano.
Lyrics
School can be tough, especially goodbyes, Gimme a kiss and cuddle, make it tight Everyone there, will help show you the way, Lead you to sunshine, laughter and play.
When things get dark, inside your cave I know you’ll shine bright, and you will be saved Every fear, will just wash away, You will be fine each and every day
CHORUS - You can be brave, you can be strong You will be safe, here is where you belong Goodbye to fears, and the tears that will dry You have the courage, to give it a try
So hold my hand, then let it go and in your heart, you’ll always know An invisible string, forever there Attached from anywhere No need to be so scared
You only find rainbows, after it rains, and I will be here at the end of the day, This isn’t farewell, it won’t be too long, Whenever you need, just sing this song,
CHORUS - You can be brave, you can be strong You will be safe, here is where you belong Goodbye to fears, and the tears that will dry You have the courage, to give it a try
Take a deep breath in, slowly let it out, Trust in yourself, forget all your doubts, I know this is hard, you’re doing so well, So much to learn, and stories to tell Find your light, my shining star, Cos everybody loves you, for who you are
CHORUS
Juni's lyrics - My friends can help Together everbody loves me, the part where I'm me You can be brave because I am with you cos I have invisible string it feels good at pickup, I will see you later because I love you I can be brave Goodnight

this is incredibly sweet. I love the way that you slowly added in now accompaniment elements in each verse, it built it up slowly and very effectively. I love that the chorus especially is so friendly and singable for little voices - the part where your kid is singing her own part really got me. 😭
I'm habitually lazy, so I'd have tuned the piano in post.
You caught something very real about being a parent here. Ooh this bass is nice; arrives just at the right spot.
Brushes!
Wait, is that her breathing out? Nice!
Dude WHAT! She's adorable.
Mr Rogers would have been so proud of you, Hanster. Top quality dadding there.
Also, if you don’t know it yet please check out the Gold String album by Devon Sproule. It’s in my top 5 of all time. The whole album is an invisible string journey and it’s sooo beautiful.
OMG you absolutely exploded my heart with this listen on my drive home from pre-K drop off. What an incredible affirmation song and time capsule for you both of this moment. Her little voice is precious and the invisible string!! 💕 I love that you put her deep breath in there too. Will be playing this for my little Lucy (Scrimbo) at pickup today and probably every day!!
Aw thanks for the kind words! Will definitely be checking out that Gold String album. Who knew a book could inspire so much music! Eager to catch up on listening to some of your stuff once I’m over the finish line😊✌🏻
Okay well now I feel silly because I don't know the book reference. Help me!
Ahh, this is so lovely, and a lovely sentiment. Sorry things are tough, but I'm glad you're getting cathartic songs of it. I love all of it, but that bridge is especially gorgeous - a very Beatles inspired Radiohead progression I'd say. Getting a real Carole King vibe from this (if you ever did it live, I reckon a You've Got A Friend) interpolation could work. OMG I'd not read with Juni was in this so that was the greatest of jump-scares. How ruddy cute!
