White Turtleneck

Liner Notes
A chance encounter a few days ago reminded me of this incident that happened nearly 50 years ago. I found it hilarious that I so vividly recalled this incident, which for all practical purposes was a non-event. Thoroughly entertained by that thought, and it being FAWM, I was immediately inspired me to write this song.
This is a very rough demo recording. The essence is there though.
Lyrics
I was a young boy, all of thirteen Carol, a young woman and the scene, was unforeseen Innocently eat’n lunch, in a busy lodge When Carol approached, her cheeks red, from the cold Removed her sweater, pulled it overhead And there it was, there it was
A turtleneck, a turtleneck So pure and white I was dazzled by the sight Awakened, awakened, my emotions took flight An embarrassingly unexpected delight
Died and gone to heaven, took just a second The memory still etched upon my mind, ingrained in my mind Daydreaming ‘bout, white turtlenecks and Reflect on that timeless design, from time to time
A turtleneck, a turtleneck So pure and white I was dazzled by the sight Awakened, awakened, my emotions took flight An embarrassingly unexpected delight
I wonder if Natalie Portman has white turtlenecks Or Anne Hathaway, will somebody please check
A turtleneck, a turtleneck So pure and white I was dazzled by the sight Awakened, awakened, my emotions took flight An embarrassingly unexpected delight

Very vivid. I now have a bright white turtleneck before my eyes!
This is such a funny and oddly sweet snapshot. I love the doubled vocals on the chorus, they really make it pop in a subtle way. Your fingerpicking keeps things light and nostalgic, which fits the whole memory perfectly. The Natalie Portman/Anne Hathaway moment is a nice touch
Love the lyrics and the catchy chorus - cheeky nostalgia - turtlenecks under sweaters were the thing here in the UK 50+ years ago too.
This is such a clever way to tell that kind of coming of age story. The humour keeps it light, but there’s a real sweetness underneath it. The white turtleneck refrain is ridiculously catchy, and the fingerpicking suits the reflective vibe perfectly. Feels like one of those memories that grows bigger and funnier the older you get. Awesome fingerpicking too, has a slight Mississippi John Hurt feel to it on this one 👌
So hang on... Carol was wearing a turtleneck under a sweater. Is that normal? Strong look, either way. Well done, Carol. Brilliant Dylan-esque picking on this one. And I loved hearing the lesser-spotted richaaaay harmonies. They're a real treat to the ear. The bridge is great, where you slow it down on the phrase "will somebody please check". This was clearly not a non-event for young Rich. This was a nascent turtleneck-inspired sexual awakening. What a moment, thank you for sharing it dude 😂
It's cold here in the winter. Very common for people to wear a turtleneck under a sweater in Vermont/New Hampshire. That's pretty much my daily attire here in the winter. Hope you found it entertaining. I've been awaiting your response. You are my barometer. I figured if you didn't get a good chuckle out of it, I was in trouble.
Not sure I should be your barometer, but definitely got several good chuckles out of it!
My inner 13 year old is never far from the surface even nearly 50 years later. I like the wistful sense of awakening and becoming in this story.
Love your playing and singing and the way you unraveled this tale. Cool that you got a song out of such a sweet and slightly funny memory. I recall a few hot men in turtlenecks at uni. I get it. Haa
Oh la la la! Fab storytelling in this one. I like the 'timeless design' line.. lovely soft finger picking
Lovely song, tapping into the vivid imagination and the stage of life of a thirteen year old boy and described so vividly. I don't know if it's a true story but it easily could be. The sense of captivation in a bright young imagination. In this demo form it's already a delightful listen. Your finger-picking and flavourful vocal is all it needs. 'The memory still etched upon my mind'... the unforgettable impact of such a moment...
Ah, "there it was." I love your delivery on that line... and honestly, every line, your voice seems to do the same things that hugs do to me! Also, reflecting on that timeless desire, wow, your words give me goosebumps! So happy to get to see you on Zoom tonight, and I am so excited to go back and listen to all of your songs as Fawm is nearing its end :) I also agree that the essence is there, and I ditto Beacon, you have really told this story so beautifully without fully using specifics, brilliant!
A young boy's life passage brought to a very cheeky song. Nicely done Richaaaay! The way you've described this with no specific statements. Well done.
It's a remarkable memory when you can pinpoint the moment when your adolescent hormones kicked in. It's a cute and humorous story. As always, love the fingerpicking. The double vocals was a nice touch too.
