The Art of Slipping

Liner Notes

I had an epiphany. If I play ALL the notes, then I must have played all the right notes!

This is me trying to learn side-slipping (aka side-stepping) with the minor pentatonic. The idea is to slip the whole scale up and down out of key, typically a half step. Peak comedy ensues.

It's also interesting that if you slip the minor pentatonic down a half step, you'll get a Lydian sound. I made sure to try that "bright up, dark down" idea I mentioned earlier, and boom, it works once again. I left myself a clear reminder of that at 0:32 with a lick ascending the scale slipped down, descending normally, first slow, then fast.

I wish the playing were a bit more relaxed on the demo, my fingers really fought me on this one. It's so different from my normal style.

I was already laughing even before I had time to hit the play button. Upon reading your introduction, I first thought you wanted to play all the notes at the same time (because of my catcore collaborations with Mantra, who did exactly that). Actually, it's way more complicated than that, and of course you had to do it at light speed. I'm going to have to listen a few times to enjoy fully the harmonic fine details, because you're going too fast for me. 😂 [...] Thoughts 3-4 listens later; everything sounds quite euphonious; wondering to what extent the speed is affecting the way I perceive the changes; maybe your fingers tried to tell you that the line between genius and insanity is thin.

Haha, that's awesome! And yeah, speed (and tactus) definitely affects the perception of dissonances a lot, along with how the tense notes resolve and stuff like that. Repetition and familiarity of patterns (like the pentatonic scale) are also huge factors.

This lies on the border between heavy metal and classic rock. Fantastic guitar work
