Liner Notes

this is based around this quote from Baha'u'llah (founder of the Baha'i Faith): 'The earth is but one country, and mankind it's citizens'

I wrote the chorus melody some weeks back but went back to this yesterday, possibly because of an article I saw about an American who was deported to Laos despite never having visited there.. (arrived as a refugee I believe), and he is now separated from his wife and kids.. totally inhumane!

I think my subconscious influences for this were:

  1. a protest song called 'I can't breathe' by H.E.R - go check it out! I listen to it a lot so think I have some of the vibe in this (I hope!)
  2. My uni friend Harry Bird who is an amazing folk musician who writes lots of folks songs, and I remember he used to shout 'YEP!' a the end of sentences!

Lyrics

There’s something I gotta say out loud Wanna shout it from the rooftops in every town An age-old truth but it’s not being told Instead, they put up borders and drive out our brothers Send deportation orders, leave children without fathers They don’t know that we’re poorer when we don’t trust each other So say it louder, will you listen?

The whole earth is one country, and mankind its citizens (x4)

Why do we want to create division? When we’re stronger together, yeah this could be different I want to believe that our nature is good, but I don’t see a future with all of this Fighting and mistrust and intimidation There’s no hope for us so let’s pray for our children I pray they will learn from our abominations If we don’t destroy all we’ve been given, so sing!

The whole earth is one country, and mankind its citizens

So I’m gonna say it louder, I’m gonna tell the truth now Gonna sing and shout ‘cause I’ve got nothing to lose ‘cause it can’t get no worse We’re already broken and I don’t know why we won’t heed this call

This would've gone down well at Woodstock. Love your delivery of it and totally with you on the sentiment. Beautiful stuff @serene

Ah, what a superb quote. It's breathtakingly simple really, isn't it. I really like the quick, dense lyrics in the verse contrasting with the singalong chorus. And the cool ad libs at the end. Well said*, Serene. (*sorry sung).

They are not listening , greed and power is winning! BUT keep saying it - dont give up hope - cycles turn - cool protest song! I am going to post the quote everywhere i go! maybe it will stick

That is a sentiment I can hugely get behind. And I would imagine I’m far from alone in saying that. I can envision thousands of people singing your song, marching in unity. Nice work, Serene.
