The Better Part of a Decade

Y'all my cold came back with a vengeance and I have no idea if any of this is remotely coherent. I am determined to meet the goal!
I've had a lot of complex grief in my personal pool recently and this is a meditation on that among other things.
Lyrics
Math wasn’t my subject Though i was obsessed by numbers The ticking of every clock Stole sleep, is it any wonder
It feels so good to be able to miss you Smooth and uncomplicated Water off a duck’s back, gliding on a goose brain I know that sounds cold - was it hard to slip away? Hard to slip away?
The paint’s not even dry yet Though not for lack of watching The sun hasn’t even set On the ground on which I’m standing
It was hard to watch you fade Of course we wanted you to stay One foot out the door - an eye on the shore Treading water for the better part of a decade
Guess it’s just a bookend Propping up a library of grief Glad to have made it to the end Wrinkles forming from a to z
The dirt’s still fresh on your place Amongst the friends we lost on the way If we had control it would never fade But we gotta bury the worst parts of a decade
The worst part of a decade

I love the sheer number of concepts and comparisons you work into what might have been a very different song. It's almost as if you are trying out as many ways to process grief as you can think of. Control of the guitar groove and the vocal rhythms / harmonies add to that amazing language use to create something really memorable (even if your own memory is a bit foggy).
You're a fantastic song writer, a cold can't stop you! Thank you for sharing.
Such a cool guitar groove. I'm getting a Juliana Hatfield vibe with the chorus. Awesome harmonies. "Water off a duck’s back, gliding on a goose brain" - love this line. Not too shabby for having a cold.
Man, Juliana Hatfield is a great pull. She's always kinda kicking around my subconscious. Thanks!
'It feels so good to be able to miss you' is such a gut punch of a line. Sorry that your cold came back, still sounds great.
Ooof, those lyrics!
I love the stanza: It was hard to watch you fade Of course we wanted you to stay One foot out the door - an eye on the shore Treading water for the better part of a decade
