Ghosts of New York
Liner Notes
A little ditty about coming back to NYC after leaving and also being older and noticing how much has changed. We lived there from 1991-2005. This is at the edge of my vocal range - either I warm up better or change the key… #ukulele #whistling
Lyrics
Ghosts of New York Darryl Gregory 2026
Verse: Meet me at the corner of Columbus and 74 We’ll get bagels at the place you spilled coffee on the floor Oh but wait I don’t think it’s there any more Things sure have changed since we left New York
Verse: Meet me at the corner of Leonard and West Broadway In a SOHO loft where our downtown friends used to hang out and play Oh but wait I think that billionaires live there today Things sure have changed since we ran to the ‘burbs upstate
Chorus: Oh New York, New York, New York We never should have left Oh New York, New York, New York Now we feel like unwanted guests Nothing is where we left it But I guess that’s for the best Oh New York, New York We never should have left
Bridge: City life ain’t what it used be when we were young The places where we danced and drank are all long gone We wander around the neighborhoods and we just feel lost Our connections are dead, and we haunt the place like lingering ghosts
Verse: Meet me in the Village at that place I used to play guitar I’ll sign up for the open mike and pretend I’m an old rock star Oh but wait that place closed down and now it’s a bougie wine bar Things sure have changed but maybe they’ve gone too far
Chorus: Oh New York, New York, New York We never should have left Oh New York, New York, New York Now we feel like unwanted guests Nothing is where we left it But I guess that’s for the best Oh New York, New York We never should have left Oh New York We never should have left
That uptempo lovely uke and such a catchy melody really caught my ear. I am enjoying your vocal delivery and phrasing. Wonderful story telling. The chorus rhythm is so cool - and you echo it with the uke which is perfect. Nice use of repetition also. You are an excellent whistler which is something I do not get to hear very often. It also fits in your song perfectly. This one was really fun to listen to - well done!
