I was paired by @beto’s amazing #postcardchallenge with @sjbatavia, who sent me a lovely postcard of the little red lighthouse on the Hudson River. There’s a whole story behind it, and it inspired this song. Thank you for this priming of my songwriting pump! 😀

Der kleine rote Leuchtturm steht ganz nah am breiten Fluß. Wenn es dunkelt, tanzt sein Licht über die Wellen. Allen Booten zeigt er, wie sie ihre Bahnen lenken müssen, um nicht an den scharfen Felsen zu zerschellen. Der kleine rote Leuchtturm sieht den großen Schiffen zu, auf ihren langen, ruhigen Fahrten bis zur See. Mit ihren Lampen rot und grün ziehen sie gemächlich dahin Mit ihren Lampen rot und grün an Luv und Lee.

Licht in der Nacht, immer ein Leuchtturm, der wacht, der dir den Weg weist, wohin du auch reist, es strahlt ein kleiner roter Leuchttum in der Nacht.

Doch dann bauen sie eine Brücke aus Beton und grauem Stahl, mit weiten Bögen, die die Flussufer verbinden. Wenn die Nacht anbricht, dann blinkt an jedem Bogen ein Signal, damit die Schiffe ihre Fahrtrinne auch finden. Der kleine rote Leuchtturm kommt sich überflüssig vor; die Baugesellschaft will ihn demontieren. Da sagt ein jeder Kapitän: „Lasst unseren roten Leuchtturm stehen, sein kleines Licht hilft, unsere Schiffe gut zu führen.“

Diese Geschichte soll dir sagen, dass auch du ein Leuchtturm bist, der Trost und Hoffnung in der Finsternis verbreitet. In mancher düsteren Nacht hast du mir schon dein helles Licht gebracht, aus Sturm und Regenwetter hast du mich geleitet mit deinem warmen Strahlen, deiner frohen Zuversicht, mit deinem Lachen und mit deiner Zärtlichkeit. Lass mich auch dir ein Leuchtturm sein, ich lass dich niemals mehr allein und führ dich liebevoll aus deiner Dunkelheit.

The little red lighthouse stands very close to the wide river. When it gets dark, its light dances across the waves. It shows all boats how to steer their course so they do not crash on the sharp rocks. The little red lighthouse watches the big ships on their long, calm journeys out to the sea. With their red and green lights, they sail leisurely along, with their red and green lights, windward and leeward.

Light in the night, always a lighthouse watching, showing you the way, wherever you travel, a little red lighthouse shines in the night.

But then they build a bridge of concrete and grey steel, with wide arches connecting the riverbanks. When night falls, a signal flashes on each arch, so that the ships can find their channel. The little red lighthouse feels superfluous; the construction company wants to dismantle it. Then every captain says: "Leave our red lighthouse standing, its little light helps to guide our ships safely.”

This story is meant to tell you that you, too, are a lighthouse, spreading comfort and hope in the dark. On many a bleak night, you have brought me your bright light, you have guided me through storms and rainy weather with your warm radiance, your cheerful confidence, with your laughter and with your tenderness. Let me be a lighthouse for you as well, I will never leave you alone again and I will lovingly guide you out of your darkness.
