Put this together for @unknownbecky's Friday song circle on Zoom where this week's prompt is "Undiagnosed". I guess this character is more like someone wrestling with questionable self-diagnosis, both in the present and the past, as they experience a flood of nostalgic emotions about adolescent life in their hometown. I'll do a live, acoustic guitar version for the song circle tomorrow, but I just kept imagining that fiddle and dobro in my head, so I couldn't resist breaking out some Band In a Box for that.

Lyrics

Shelbyville Words & Music - Jeff Walker & BIAB

Back to where I started A little house, a little town A little smaller than I picture When memories come around

Guess we were pretty reckless When we climbed up on that roof To hide away for our first kiss It tasted like the truth

History runs backwards Or that’s how it seems to go When the years are all piled up Like cordwood in the snow

Sometimes I can imagine A scene where we would meet Reminisce on love and loss Relive the bittersweet

In Shelbyville, Shelbyville In Shelbyville, Shelbyville Tennessee

I thought I really loved you In my tender teenage heart But under further scrutiny My diagnosis falls apart

So I think it’s better this way Frozen like a photograph That little house looking large Your eyes twinkling in mid-laugh

In Shelbyville, Shelbyville Shelbyville, oh Shelbyville Tennessee

Well done on this write Jeff Funny but I’m hearing shall-be-ville which makes it even more ironic.

So very true, isn’t it? You have the perfect voice for this type of song. Acoustic would be lovely, too.
