Grandma's Handbag

Challenge: MIXED EMOTIONSLiner Notes
I was seeking inspiration when my lovely wife and I were talking and I mentioned that I had roll of breath savers come apart in my pocket and she called them lint mints. Light bulb moment, I just had to write a song about it. The subject in the song is fictional but I have a feeling most everyone has had it happen or know someone it has happened to. Fun to write and fun to play. #acousticonetake #fun #folk #guywithguitar

Grandma’s Handbag F.A.W.M. 2026 ©schnowd
Grandma lived in a great big house On the other side of town Whenever we would visit her She’d say “Kids now gather round, “Cuz I have a treat for you” And we all never knew Just what she had in store For me and you
And then she would dispense From her leather handbag immense It might be candy or chewing gum Perhaps a dollars or 50 cents She loved us one and all And we loved our Grandma so We just couldn’t wait to see her In sunshine or in snow
Grandma’s handbag Smelled like soap and wintergreen Little crumpled notes And pictures folded at the seams Half a life in zippers Half a life in silver snaps Grandma’s handbag Held the things the years forgot to pack
Once I had a smear of dirt On the left side of my face She reached into her handbag And her hanky left no trace Her handbag was a treasure trove No matter what the need She could fetch most anything And do it at warp speed
If you had a headache A sort throat or a cough Grandma’s handbag had it To ward the illness off Now and then as she grew old Her reach was not as nimble Once she reached for an aspirin I was offered a silver thimble
Grandma’s handbag Smelled like soap and wintergreen Little crumpled notes And pictures folded at the seams Half a life in zippers Half a life in silver snaps Grandma’s handbag Held the things the years forgot to pack
It was no way intentional And I couldn’t have had a hint When I asked her for a lifesaver And was handed a lint mint Most of you have seen these Inside a pocket or purse reside The one piece at the end of a roll That looks fuzzy and all dried
It was too embarrassing To eat what I was handed It was replaced with clean and new And my pardon she’d demanded But now she gone as we all do And I miss her just the same But I’d eat an entire roll of lint mint Just to see her once again.
Grandma’s handbag Smelled like soap and wintergreen Little crumpled notes And pictures folded at the seams Half a life in zippers Half a life in silver snaps Grandma’s handbag Held the things the years forgot to pack
