Not To Scale

Liner Notes

hadn't written a ballad yet

Lyrics

I don’t want to scare away the magic Sentimental garbage severing a heartstring You can say anything if you practice Benefits of being a good-enough actor

Size me up before I’m gone Entropy won’t offer long

I’m not to scale I’m bound to fail When i crash into the earth they’ll ask What enormous thing was here Imagine what they’ll find In geologic time All the remnants of a life And not the context to know What it was like

I don’t want to be a wrench in the process Interference reversing the compass You can believe anything if you practice Benefits of being a good-enough actor

Measure me before i grow Entropy demands it so

I’m not to scale I’m bound to fail When i crash into the earth they’ll ask What enormous thing was here Imagine what they’ll find In geologic time All the remnants of a life And not the context to know What it was like

Perched on a wire Then walking Encroached on a tide And faltering It’s no one fault that you’re tired And longing If it’s made of material Erosion is typical

I'm glad I chose this song to listen for my reciprocal comment. I'm a second generation geologist and those elements are oddly comforting to me. The (un)knowable grandness as a beloved household mystery.

First thoughts: your voice and the instrumental feel disconnected to me, in a way that feels intentional and supporting the themes in the lyrics. During the verses, this disconnect is the most apparent, I think. The chorus is a beautiful harmony, a contrast to the verse, but it's almost... too harmonious. Forcefully resolved. It's the bridges and the end of the song where your singing and the music feel the most in relationship to one another.

(relistening) The panning, distorted chorus is a beautiful representation of cycles of time eroding what once was. A river cutting into the plateau.

Beautiful song. Thank you.

i really like the sound world the track is living in, it really suits the theme. feel like I'm floating (in space? or a body of water?) and contemplating. It was lovely to listen to.
