The Direction In Which My Head Spins

Liner Notes

Four songs into FAWM, and already I'm sick of writing pop music. It's not very pop-ish at all as is, but even what I'm doing is more poppy than I want to write. If I had my way, all the music I put on FAWM would sound like this. This is not meant to be ear candy. It invokes emotion not through catchy chorus or neat melodic line, but by rhythm, tempo, and dynamic. You may not find it listenable. If you do want to try listening to it, I would recommend the following approach: Close your eyes and try to forget your sense of meter. The song has little. Feel the vibrations of the song, and stay in tune with that. If you can't do it, this music is probably not for you anyway.

that's quite an engrossing and interesting sonic journey there! Reminds me a bit of that 'third stream' jazz movement of the 1950's where jazz composers tried some 'thru-composed' things that borrowed from then-modern classical folks... there's a present day jazz composer named Maria Schneider who does things a bit like this as well- and by coincidence, I saw her and her 17 piece band at a jazz club here in NYC last week.(you can probably find her stuff on youtube or wherever) All to say this is really nicely done- love that accelerando (or whatever they call that speeding up bit) at the end! great stuff, nicely put together and arranged!

Very cool experimentation. Sort of like a tone poem that had a fight with a percussion pit. I did just try to close my eyes and this piece took me to a lot of places in my mind. Good job.
