Gloom of My Tomb
Liner Notes
This is a song about being a mysterious creature forced to act on the whims of an evildoer. The thing about writing longer songs is that there's more words to forget and more chords to get wrong. This is the best take of about a dozen.
Lyrics
I stir awake beneath the beautiful moon I hear the scurrying of rats in my tomb As I am summoned from my rest
A coaxing chant spoke by a tongue so queer Those incantations are exactly what I feared And I'm not feeling at my best
How can I carry out my sacred duty? When I'm compelled to pilfer earthly beauties Buy a shadow in the gloom Of my tomb?
Night by night I'm forced to shuffle around Draw blood in boudoirs and cause havoc in the towns And doing nothing I intend to
I'm drained of life, I'm just walking sleep Don't have the will to figure out the key Will this be it until the end?
Can't hope to carry out my sacred duty When I'm compelled to snuff out light and beauty By a monster in the gloom Of my tomb
Comments
The lyrics are dark, but the delivery is quite light in feel. It does make for an interesting tale though.
It's such an interesting perspective for a song, and I really like how much sympathy this generates for this sad-sack creature and his plight! The feeling of loss of control is obviously a deep-rooted fear that could lead to a dour track is less-deft hands, but this song succeeds in putting a very amusing spin on it without losing the underlying pathos.
It's a bright little tune and it lightens up the darkish lyrics. It adds paradox which is suspect is essential for the lyrics
