Poison

Skirmish: Tell tall tales (@richardmasters)
There is no demo for this song.

Liner Notes

The skirmish theme: Tell Tall Tales. The constraint: Use five words from a random-word generator. My words: shatter, grubby, curtain, dive, pour.

[I removed the recording because I hadn't learned the melody yet. I may post a new recording later.]

Lyrics

You called me from Florida and pulled the curtain wide I felt the shatter shatter deep inside Such a grubby story since the world was three But always new to someone, and this time it was me

Day to day to day to day, split but not apart Carving your initials in my heart Pour out my poison in a phone call with a friend Back when I didn’t know my heart could mend

Now I make funny faces to the windows and the sky Try to look presentable and not to die When you dive down into the pool of time It’s funny how the stories always rhyme

I pour out this poison that they call a special blend And tell tall tales of how my heart could mend

So beautiful and moving song, singing and playing. A very poetic and creative take on the prompt. Sincere and melodious, with lovely chords.

Hats off for weaving the random words into a cohesive, well told experience of the heart 'Such a grubby story since the world was three But always new to someone, and this time it was me' - great opener & then it's a shattering ending with 'tell tall tales how my heart could mend.' And I agree about the chords - the changes are familiar and then do something unexpected - an effective echo of the character's feeling.

What great piano chords - somewhere between Steely Dan, jazz and classical. Great take on the skirmish.

So much to love here. "...always new to someone, and this time that was me" is such a beautiful turn of phrase. "Try to look presentable and not to die" feels like all I can manage some days. I get strong echoes of Leonard Cohen here (in the best possible way!). Fantastic work!
