Season Finale, Part 1

Liner Notes

I really liked The Mountain Goats' Bleed Out, a lovely album about action movies. John Darnielle is a writer who can really write a Scene, and has that very interesting and altogether modern sense we may as well call "camera proprioception." I tried to borrow some of that here.

This song is about a pivotal major character death in the first half of a season finale. Details optional.

Lyrics

The sound comes first Then the body falls A ripping scream of anguish Echoes through the halls All time defers Bends before your will A bubble in the jetstream Where everything holds still, still, still.

Turn your face to me Let the camera see That furrowed brow of sorrow In close-up majesty Raise up your hand Dripping red down out of frame If not for your assistance How would I know I'm slain?

[Ch] And I'll ask you how it looks down there And you'll say whatever you say But everyone already knows Today is the day

Choke out final words Hold your hand in mine Lament the implications Of a just and grand design Hang on a little longer Than anyone else expects Reward your faith in me Then move on to the next, next, next

High above the ground Or from deep down below Someone's gonna come And take me where I'm meant to go So cover up my eyes Drain my soggy lungs And spot me one last time Place a coin beneath my tongue

[Ch]

Is this about an actual tv show or more of a theoretical tv show? I’m digging it, the vocals and guitar hooked me in immediately. I love the 90s esque vibe of this (almost Blues Traveler like to my ear). Really well written and thought out lyrics and they flow very well.
