Liner Notes

When I saw the lyrics from kahlo2013 I felt compelled to create some music for them. I used MuseScore (which I've been using for about 3 days) on my computer to write the music, then made a recording with my phone as I played the music over my crappy computer speakers while singing with my crappy voice. Things are pretty low-tech here :-)

Liz says: The prompt was to write from the perspective of a place or thing… I wrote from the perspective of a thing - any guesses on what that thing might be?

Thanks @karendemello for bringing this lyric to life so beautifully! Lovely musical tract with flute and gorgeous melody. It flows beautifully! Amazing to think it was 45 years ago that we played together at your piano recital.

Lyrics

V1 now I’m cold and I’m lonely no hands have held me or touched me for years

how I wish she was here

C lying in the dark I often think of her I remember the hours we’d spend

cradled in my space I can feel her fingers I remember the heat from her breath

V2 now I’m gray and I’m tarnished no lips have warmed me or sought me or cared

how I want her her near

C lying in the dark I often think of her I remember the hours we’d spend

cradled in my space I can feel her fingers I remember the heat from her breath

This is amazing. Great collab. I have never thought about writing from the viewpoint of an object. Very compelling lyrics and the haunting flute in the background is delightful.

Thank you! When I read Liz's incredible lyrics I just knew that I had to write some music with a ghostly flute part :-)

So sad! The short phrases with the underpinning pulses of chords (initially) give an intensity -- and the bursts of different types of (almost dissonant) music adds to the instability. And I love that, though I assume you're writing about an instrument (flute?) it completely works on a more mundane level too. Nicely done!

Sad indeed! The ghost of Liz's flute crying out :-) Thank you!

poor lonely sad flute and its mournful silence ..yet in in the background i can hear her imagined song.

Maybe someday the flute will be resurrected and play again ~ we can hope :-)

@kahlo2013 oh my gosh 45 years??? I just looked up the program and you’re right: 28 February 1981. That is a bit surreal. Definitely good memories. This year I’m leading a winter nature walk on the 28th - maybe I should play recordings of some of the pieces while on the hike? :-)

Is this about Liz's flute? Nice to hear you two collaborating! The harmonized piano and flute melody sections are especially cool.

[pic]

It is! That little harmonized section is a nod to Claude Bolling, glad you liked it :-)

Beautiful song with small Tori Amos vibes.

Oooh Tori - hadn’t thought of that (I love her music). Thank you!
