I found this cool public domain poem by Madison Julius Cawein a few days ago. Then my songwriting challenge today was "write a song in Dm" . So, I used the poem and wrote in Dm, with a little Beatles-esque shift to F in the chorus, and voila!

Lyrics

Broken Music By Madison Julius Cawein

Verse 1 There it lies broken, as a shard, What breathed sweet music yesterday; The source, all mute, has passed away With its masked meanings still unmarred.

Chorus But melody will never cease! Above the vast cerulean sea Of heaven, created harmony Rings and re-echoes its release!

Verse 2 So, this dumb instrument that lies All powerless, [with spirit flown, Beyond the veil of the Unknown To chant its love-hymned litanies, ]

Chorus Repeat

Verse 3 Though it may thrill us here no more With cadenced strain, in other spheres Will rise above the vanquished years And breathe its music as before!

Chorus Repeat - end

So creative- the poem is a great fit for the Dm Beatlesque vibe! Wonderful performance- well done!

Very cool song, singing and playing. Good choice of lyrics. Music brings them to the next level and it's a pleasure to listen to.

Nice use of Dm. That chorus really stands out. It all fits. If you didn’t mention that this was someone else’s poem, the emotion in the singing makes it feel there is a deep attachment between singer and lyrics. Cool.

Some great lyrics here: "vast cerulean sea" "love-hymned litanies". I like the strong vibe of the chorus, the vocals and the strumming.

Excellent musical setting for this poem! Like others have said, the chorus has really nice changes, keeps the listener guessing but also deeply satisfying. Your voice is awesome too, so much body during the chorus and it fits so well to the resilient tone of the poetry.

Wow, I really love the change of chords for the chorus. That's killer.

Beautiful poem and lovely performance. I like the emotional vocal and the punchy baritone uke. Keep rocking the four strings (I went from all the uke sizes to tenor guitar to, finally, six-string guitar. I still have a soft spot for four, though)!

Great voice and nice baritone ukulele. Great song.

It sounds great! Really nice voice and guitar playing. I really like the melody, especially in the chorus! That's a cool idea, finding public domain poetry to turn into a song. Nice job!

I really like how your voice expands in the chorus. Very nice chord progression too. Fun to listen to!
