Sommelier
Liner Notes
#fuc #fingerpicking #one-mic #skirmish
Well, personal skirmish; I think I got this one written and recorded in about an hour just now. I got the first line near the end of a late-afternoon dog walk, and the first verse by the time I was back at the studio.
The idea was slight enough that it seemed the right time for my annual ukulele song effort, which – the (tenor) ukulele part turned out to be the hardest thing about this song. Unlike the words, which just kind of flew out. Now and then, you get one of those.
Lyrics
If I was a sommelier I would know just what to say This one’s red and this one’s white Which would you prefer tonight?
If I was a sommelier I probably would sleep all day This one’s white and this one’s red Did you not hear what I just said?
This one has a picture of a beautiful chateau This one could be beaujolais; I don’t speak french so I don’t know
If I was a sommelier I’d bring your bottle on a tray Pull out the cork and tip my hat Would you like a glass with that?

Loving the rhythm and rhymes. The humorous vocal inflection pushed me up against a wall and forced me to smile throughout.
Fun comical perspective of a sommelier. Thoroughly entertaining. Killing on that ukulele too. Packed in a lot of enjoyable moments for such a short song.
I’m not sure why, but this tickles and delights me far more than a sub 1.30min novelty song should. He’s a very vivid character, and the lines are so well judged - that last line being the cherry/grape on top. I can totally imagine this as an SNL skit. Also, some of those little rakes on the uke are really doing it for me. Nice work, sir.
Good call; I think in the back of my mind this guy is basically a Steve Martin character. Even more likely, there really was such a character and I just can’t point to the exact SNL skit myself.
You had me at rhyming "sommelier/say" -- and I love the depth of wine analysis you're presenting; pretty much my level of wine understanding. And the last line made me smile. Nice uke playing (of course).
Mine as well! (My three-point system: color, label, price.) So I think I was partly inspired by your whiskey (or not) song, too :-)
Fruity, earthy, hints of berry, crisp and bright, with a long finish.
Ha! Nice :-)
Adorable. The uke really plays up the lighthearted lyric. I especially like the bridge.
That chord-melody finger picking is so tasty. It is a cute.littlenchange up song for you.
Sommelier is Some-Yum-Yay! A short sweet tune with some fine uke picking and singing. It reminds me of the French Riviera, even though I've never been there.
Other people's jobs look easy when you dont have to do them. But this song is great. I can well believe that ukeleles are hard - I never tried to play pne but this totally suits the song. Well done
