Grease Rises to the Top

Skirmish: Grease (@atornberg)Liner Notes
#skirmish #grease #guywithpiano #political #demo I first heard this expression in college with regards to the student council. Basic physics suggests that cream will rise to the top, but sadly, grease often gets there first. Once you start looking, you'll find it everywhere: Carpetbaggers after the Civil War, the Whiskey Ring, Teapot Dome, too many bribery cases to count even if you begin with the Harding administration. And of course, the movie "Grease" where the good girl (Sandy) has to adapt to fit in with the greasers. Consider this a demo; it needs a lot more development than I could give it in skirmish time. Thanks for listening!
Lyrics
GREASE RISES TO THE TOP (c) 2026 raspberry33
I’m a fan of aphorisms Truth condensed to a clever phrase If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it Homespun wisdom deserves praise
Much depends on circumstances Cream doesn’t always make its rise Slippery people and speed money Might more quickly claim the prize
Chorus: Grease rises grease rises to the top It’s basic physics, don’t you know? Grease rises grease rises to the top When we’re just going with the flow
Verse: I think I saw it in a movie Pink Ladies, T-birds, different teams Who won? the juvenile delinquents The good girl had to change her dreams
Bridge: Teapot Dome; the Carpetbaggers Insider trading, bribery You get results by greasing the wheels It’s not some kind of mystery
CHORUS
You can look at office politics Take pages out of history Negative traits are rewarded It’s all cash on delivery
CHORUS
Grease rises – to the top! Grease rises – to the top!

Ahhh…. the truth in this stings as the sentiment is so spot on and you do such a compelling job developing it with the great examples in the lyric. Wonderfully paced and delivered message with your vocals.
Great lyrics and sad but true. I liked the way you related the phrase to different ways that shady MFers get ahead while nice guys finish last.
I know you said this is just a demo, but I really love your delivery here. Reminds me of Randy Newman. Good stuff!
Thanks! For once, being home with a bad cold worked out. Maybe pseudoephedrine nasal spray helps my vocals. And, thanks for the Randy Newman comparison - he's one of my heroes.
Really nice song! Great lyrics and melody. I really like how expressive your voice is. It works really well for this. Nice job!
Excellent title concept. I particularly like the bridge. Good vocals and lyrics Very well done skirmish
I like the sing-speech delivery here, a strong set of lyrics too - the use of visuals is really effective and the message is on the money!
