Pete Rose

I love a good sports allegory. Pete Rose was the best player of his era, but he was permanently barred from the Hall Of Fame when he was coaching the Reds & busted for betting. Did he blow games for money? No one knows.
Lyrics
The smart bet’s not the Mets I say this with regret But still I hang the banner in my window Here’s to not remembering It’s better to forget Sometimes it’s best to let the pennant go
I’m sleeping in today I get in my own way Moping around feeling like Pete Rose Bet against yourself At least you can’t blame someone else Pete Rose played the game I suppose
Pete Rose Pete Rose Pete played the game I suppose
Dogs are dreaming Cold tile floor You think they’d pick the carpet wouldn’t you Tennis balls in their eyes Beautiful blue skies Do you think they dream they’re humans too?
Pete Rose Pete Rose Pete played the game I suppose
I wish I’d spent my life Doing what I like Chance is chance but why’d I never go? I didn’t give my all Sold my lucky baseball Paying someone to shovel my snow
Pete Rose Pete Rose Where did you go No one knows Pete Rose Pete Rose Pete played the game I suppose
Winning comes and goes Winning comes and goes Cooperstown you know Open the gates for
Pete Rose Pete Rose Open the gate for Pete Rose

Love that guitar progression. Such a pensive vibe. And the vocal melody lends itself to storytelling quite well. Nice work!
What a fantastic combination of regret and rumination, the profound and the prosaic. Your intimate vocal sits on the understated production in a wonderful way. If you need an album title, "Let the Pennant Go" could work :-).
He also played the game in his post career. Sold sooo many autographed memorabilia that intentionally devalued his autograph. Now no one can really profit off it because there's so many out there.
There’s a lot to be learned from the man, good and bad!
The chorus is catchy and I like the effect you used. The dog line made me laugh.
I love this - “bet against yourself at least you can’t blame someone else” is such a good line. I love how you play with the chorus at the end, and the fade out is really nice!
I love a good fade out, and you do such a great job of telling a story with your lyrics! I'm not a baseball girlie, never heard of this man in my life, and now I feel a little more cultured lol. Well done!
