Don't Send Me / We've Been Alone Together - Vocal Experiment

by @johnstaples

Liner Notes

I have a bad cold and cannot sing at the moment. So I took a couple of song snippets I'm working on, recorded the music and then programmed Synthesizer V to add the vocals. They are not perfect as I really don't know how to use Synth V all that well!

Please note that THESE ARE NOT AI! These are samples from paid singers! Again...NO AI! But if this bothers you for any reason please just move along and skip this entirely. Absolutely no hard feelings on my end!

One thing I will note...it is a LOT less work to sing my vocal tracks than it is to program these singers. But they can sound much cleaner than me so there you go. I don't think I'll be releasing any of my music without me singing on it. But these are nice for songwriting exercises or maybe even for sending a demo to someone.

Anyway, the snippets are from two in-progress songs "Don't Send Me" and "We've Been Alone Together". There are 4 segments on this mp3, a male and female on each song snippet.

One final time...there is NO AI here! Torches and pitchforks are not allowed beyond this point! 😀

Hey, you found a use for synth V!! That's alot of work to get that thing sounding good, but you did a great job. The two intertwined tunes worked very well. I enjoyed the guitars and the melodies you created for both!! Way to persevere!!

Sorry to hear that you're under the weather, John. I'm glad that you're still actively creating music despite the cold. I have no idea how you get a synth to do what you've accomplished here, but the melody and the arrangement really work. Hope you're feeling better soon.

Looking forward to "We've Been Alone Together" inproper form. I would love to offer to sing the female part, if you want/need that later ?

Hope you feel better soon cos I love your singing WAY more than your "substitute".

Interesting experiment - i was worried about you when i heard that female vocal! I reckon there would be a lot to do - thx for disclaimers and i prefer your voice anyway

As you know, I use Synth V too from time to time (although this year I've only used it for backing vocals), and I think it can sound scarily good (and also can sound awful). But as you say, to get a good result can be a lot of work (and much more than singing oneself).

Anyway, these fragments sound great, regardless of who (or what) is singing them. They're bouncy and fun. A worthy experiment!

Impressive work (and I love all your disclaimers). I especially like Don't Send me -- particularly all the "don't"s.

Thank you, Beth!

It takes a lot of work to achieve what you did with these samples, bravo! Hope you start feeling better soon, looking forward to hearing your lovely voice again!

Thanks Abby!

A worthy experiment, hope you get your voice back soon. I like something about the symmetry here --- repetition of verses, contrast of voices.

Thank you!

I am super glad the voice artists got paid here! It still sounds a bit "uncanny valley". There's something about things that are too clean. Hope you get well soon! I just had a cold and it seriously messed up my energy levels. Rest, keep warm, and get back to FAWMing when you're good and ready!

I agree about the "uncanny valley" but I suspect I could put in a little more effort and remove that in the mix. The main problem I have with it is it just takes way too long to get the melody and timing right. Where it seems useful to me is for creating melodies in the very early stages of writing a song. Right now, for me, it is just another toy in my toolbox that rarely gets used!
