Drifted Away
Liner Notes
Debs: I came across these lovely lyrics very early into FAWM and @9nasin was gracious enough to let me put music to them. I shifted some sections around a bit - you can check out the original lyrics/structure here! https://fawm.org/songs/318022
Please also check out @sheslin’s gorgeous interpretation! https://fawm.org/songs/324177
Lyrics
Verse: I wish you well On your final tour Hope you feel secure Wherever you dwell
I miss your voice Remember your laugh While walking on this path This wasn’t your choice !
Prechorus: Today I went Down to the beach To smell the sea To smell the sea Then I closed my eyes Were you there with me?
Chorus: I spread your ash Into the waves It drifted away Just like you wished I spread your ash Into the waves You drifted away Drifted away
Bridge: The sun and sea They winked at me Like you said «thanks» For keeping my vows
Chorus: I spread your ash Into the waves It drifted away Just like you wished I spread your ash Into the waves You drifted away Drifted away
I spread your ash Into the sea And set you free Into the waves I spread your ash And just like you wished You drifted away Drifted away Off to the sea Away from me

This is such a different interpretation, where this feels like a celebration of the life, and a freeing of the person, and @sheslin 's feels like a last shared moment and saying goodbye. Both are very powerful and I think that speaks for the quality of the lyrics and the performance. I'm really enjoying the vocal inter-play, between the rhythms, harmonies, and panning. Really cool use of builds, they almost sneak up!
Your vocals are so lovely - and all the harmonies and echoes are beautifully done. Love the call and response in the pre-chorus. Wowza your chorus really takes me away - I am totally transported!! Great idea to double it also. I really like you came out of it - a beautiful set up for the bridge. All the thoughtful space in your song also adds so much - I love well used space in a song. Making the second chorus bigger was a great choice and works perfectly. The outro take us back down and closes out the song so peacefully. Your melodies are so fresh and delightful to my ears. I love your song and I am so grateful you let me do a version as well. These lyrics are so good! Great collab.
Wow that sounds so well. Such nice vocals and I like the harmonic diversions for chorus and bridge. They sound natural but make it interesting and evolving.
Layers of profound beauty here, the vocals much like patterns of water swirling in the ocean. Gorgeous way to depict grief in Nature.
Sometimes I forget how much I miss your voice!
This is a hauntingly beautiful song and filled with emotion. I love the overlaying voices done in parts and the sudden key changes.
Gorgeous! Love love love the echo-y vocals and the unexpected minor chords that come in at times. This is one of those songs that paints the picture of the imagery in the lyrics so beautifully. Awesome collab!
Oh my goodness. I'm not sure what to say other than this is absolutely FAWM-tastic! You took these already gorgeous lyrics and just brought them to life in such a magical way, the backing vox are just amazing too, holy cow!
Thank you so, so much for putting music to the lyrics — I like it so much better with a melody 🤗 You have a beautiful voice, and the chorus is incredibly good. I really love how you’ve layered so many voices. The melody in the verses is also very melodic and lovely — it really suits the piano. I’m truly very impressed by this.
Your voice is just so stunning. So sad without being mournful. Nicely done.
So heavy, human, and beautiful. What a collab.
So interesting to hear two different versions of the same lyrics. This one feels almost joyous (in a “celebration of life”way) and it shows the crucial role of the musician/vocalist in interpreting and presenting a lyric. The multiple, layered harmonies are gorgeous!
