"Your mama cried and to console her / your daddy put his arm around her shoulder" is right good, maybe that's the opening line -- I did like that you came back to it at the end. "They'll never get how it could be / how you don't want a family" is the center of the wheel here, but I'm with you that I don't know that you quite found or conveyed the story you wanted. Maybe take the daddy out of that line and it's just "you put your arm around her shoulder."
