And the Show Goes On

Liner Notes

  • Good-ish Outcome from a Technical Disaster -

The lyrics of this came quickly - I'd been playing with a couple samples and things just clicked together. I noodled about on the keyboard, falling into a very simple, repeatable motif. The piano, left kind of as is, reminded me of childhood innocence. The persistent rhythm and the digital samples felt like a grown-up contrast.

I realize that I am processing some Rather Large Feelings about the Whole Situation in the US, and this song is not very transparent.

I was thinking about Ray Bradbury's "Something Wicked This Way Comes" and about how children can be pulled into situations that get quickly out of control. And how the ringmasters manipulate things to keep power consolidated, whether the ring is a tent, an island, an airplane, or a beauty pageant. This is the bad circus, and the funhouse is not fun.

It's #political and #dark and stylistically I don't know what it is beyond that. If you listen, you can tell me what genre this would be.

This piece has been a technical frustration in every possible way. I'm crash coursing my way through Logic, largely informed by years of its baby sister, Garage Band. I worked on this one Sunday for a few hours and was almost done when I had to leave. When I got back to it, I had an error, so I closed the file after saving (for the millionteenth time.) And...it was gone. No indication of it anywhere and I was absolutely crushed.

I came back to try to recreate it, and upon save one, I found...the file! Saved in a sample pack that I couldn't access without a lot of weird madness. But, I did eventually. I've had a disastrous time with muted tracks, unmuted tracks, bounces with only half the song...BUT I DID learn a ton about this software, AND there's a song, even if the levels are probably offensive (I just can't work on it any more.) So, sorry about the mix and levels. It is what it is and I'll know a little better when I work on the next one.

Lyrics

-And the Show Goes On-

Bring your pennies See the show Drink in all a girl should know  Stare in silence  As you learn  Danger lurks at every turn Mirror mirrors every where Dance and warp  Straight through your stare Sound and light at every turn Their glazed eyes Show no concern Their glazed eyes Show no concern

Mirror mirror who is there Rouging cheek and curling hair In the flickering shaded light Staining lips with eyes closed tightly. And the show goes on nightly

Fun house ladder, twist and turn Feelings smolder, passions burn Innocent, you didn’t yearn For the secrets, for the lies, for the coy ringmasters eyes, Or their escape between your Mirror mirror who is there Rouging cheek and curling hair In the flickering shaded light Staining lips with eyes closed tightly. And the show goes on nightly

You're amazing You're the star Center ring and there you are Spotlight powered By your spark Bought their tickets in the dark Mirror mirrors every where Youth and beauty Bought to share Opulence covers the cage To hide the death That soothes their rage To hide the death That soothes their rage

Mirror mirror who is there Rouging cheek and curling hair In the flickering shaded light Staining lips with eyes closed tightly. And the show goes on nightly

Mirror mirror who is there Rouging cheek and curling hair In the flickering shaded light As we all sleep so tightly. And the show goes on nightly

Mirror mirror who is there Rouging cheek and curling hair In the flickering shaded light As we all sleep so tightly. And the show goes on And the show goes on

We are all Processing So Much right now, not just in the US but I suspect the whole world. The samples call to my mind 90s alternative music which was often about the darker aspects of the world too. Their contrast with the fairy tale/circus references and sweet lilting vocals is jarring and reflective of the sick feeling many of us are feeling right now.

Fawm is not the time for perfecting a mix, but this sounds good to me! Logic is definitely a learning curve. I've watched so many tutorial YouTube videos over the years.

The synth beds work so well with the idea of a hall of mirrors, warping the viewer so they come back looking distorted and different. With the very fast lyrics at the beginning, then the slowdown, and the rythm and pace coming back at 1:45, then the repeated mantra at the end - the song has a kind of symphonic quality. Nice moody song which stands out! Well done.
