Liner Notes

I wrote the melody first for the Sawtooth Melody challenge. Last summer, a fierce storm felled many large oaks in my town. We were lucky to just lose large branches, none of which hit the house. In the morning, the chipmunks were feasting on all the acorns on the downed limbs. I used garage band to give my ukulele an edge, and my vocals some echo.

Lyrics

Dark clouds building A sudden charge in the air Rumbling thunder Sideways rain Fierce wind

Old oak branches come crashing down Nearly missing the house Playing cards by candlelight Retiring to bed early

Sunshines where once shade What was up is now down Chipmunks busy Acorns all over the ground

Vivid portrayal in sparse wording; each word counts. Yup, that sideways rain is quite the indicator. Love how the chipmunks end up happy - nature's cycles.

I think this story really works well with the sawtooth prompt. I like the spareness of it too. Like “what was up is now down”.

We went through a big storm a few years ago and were also fortunate enough to not have any damage to our house, but it was scary. I remember the sadness seeing all those huge tree limbs and even whole trees lying on the ground in the aftermath.

I love how in three short verses you take us on the whole journey, from the coming storm right through to a happy ending for the chipmunks! Your melody is spot on for this challenge, and your vocals and uke really do it justice. Well done! 👍
