Turn Out My Way
Liner Notes
Maybe this is unfair, but I've always assumed that there's not much going on in the little noggin of a mourning dove. They always look like they just realized where they are. Yet I somehow found myself venturing deep into the soul of a mourning dove today...
Zero to song in one day! Very fun. It was interesting trying to figure out if the natural home was G or a modal D. Think I pushed it toward G ultimately, but it lives in between.
Lyrics
I never quite know where I’m going Can’t always say where I’ve been Whenever that wind starts a blowing, my friend It seems I start over again
I rarely make plans with others I do what I can to get by But sometimes I sit here and wonder all day If you would be willing to try
Chorus: So won’t you help me to land on the line Keep me from flying away Sing me a song as the daylight gets long And things just might turn out my way
Inside my heart there’s a feeling So hard to figure it out Sometimes I catch you stealing a glance And it leaves me without any doubt
So let’s take on this big world together Bobbing our heads as we go We’ve always been birds of a feather And now it’s time you know
[Chorus]

The sweetness is rich, love this one. Every part of it feels so natural, like there's no other way for this song to be.
In between is a good place to be. I'm in awe of how you can write a bird song that can so convincingly not be a song about birds -- impressive metaphor work. I love "Sing me a song as the daylight gets long" -- both what it says and where it goes melodically.
Thanks Beth. I'm in awe of how you can write 7 great songs in 7 days! #fearless indeed!
This song really takes flight. Love the double meaning of the lyrics and the nice reverby lead guitar. My wife feeds the birds a lot and we have a whole group of morning doves that have been hanging around. With our cat keeping watch on them through the window.
