Skirmish: SuperPUN Sunday (@dudachris)Liner Notes
#skirmish #electric #blues So this started out as a skirmish, where you have an hour to write and record to a prompt, in this case " 'superPUN sunday' -write a song about either the super bowl, or pro or anti-sports, or use puns" (no, I didn't think of this prompt!) I'm not a big sports guy, never have been- and nothing, truthfully, against those that are, its just not my jam...that being said, I do think this American football obsession is kind of crazy (especially as the late great comedian George Carlin pointed out, American football is all about war, vs American baseball (go look up his routine 'baseball v football' if you haven't heard it. I was playing around with that Telecaster electric guitar copy that I got from Swamp- playing it thru a tiny practice amp that has some reverb and chorusing, and thought I'd just record the amp live using a mic, then overdub a vocal. Which i did, and then added some bluesy harmonica as well near the end. Had fun doing, hope ya like! (and don't take it too seriously, if you really enjoy football, go for it) (and finally, its a late skirmish entry, but it took a while to record and mix)
Lyrics
Two parts war, and one part hometown pride One more way to get us picking sides
No I won’t be watching,I know your head just spins I just do not care at all, who wins
Rules of engagement, like 19th century soldiers And the hidden subtext, playing for shareholders
No I won’t be watching the pagent of the pigskin I just do not care at all, who wins
Even the Olympics this year, cannot bring us together Fractured tribal forces, stormy weather
Trading yards, like a frontier story Blitz and long bombs, borrowed glory
I know I sound extreme, but the world’s in a tailspin We’re all losing, when we care who wins
Comments
I really like the downward stroll of the guitar, and the artful pairing of "soldiers" and "shareholders." Throws a bright spotlight of the dynamic.
Great sound in that guitar. So tasty. Bright and sassy punctuation.
Mike, I'm always in love with your lyrics. "Trading yards, like a frontier story Blitz and long bombs, borrowed glory"
C'MON!! And the Rules of engagement line too! And yeah, we're all losing. :(
Great skirmish tune! Just great tune!
thanks!
A pretty fair take on the whole thing. I'm a reluctant sports lover often largely due to critiques evident here so I really appreciate.
My favourite couplet is the blitz/long bomb one... I'm constantly trying to wean out violent and military based phrases (along with sexist and ableist ones) and so I appreciate the connections drawn here. Great writing!
OOO love the little runs! this is a real rabbit out the hat - feels like it just materialised - oo and the harmonica again
This is perfect. I feel the same way. Loved the riff and feel the same
love those bass runs. you have made something original from pieces of the blues, rockabilly, and poetry. i agree with the idea here and go a step further. i not only dont care who wins, i dont even know or care who is playing.
Nice blues, and I'm a sucker for a Tele in any form. Good cross harp too. For American football and unhealthy level of obsession, read soccer this side of the Pond!
Anyone who can go all bluesy and diss football gets my vote, Mike. You've expressed this perfectly for both of us.
I see your pulling that tele to good use? Sport is like a war. It divides more than unites in many cases. I'm not a fooball fan and didn't watch the super bowl..but i have seen pretty good donnybrooks in the stands.
