The Double Cross Saloon

Liner Notes
I tried not to write this song. I don't even like cheating songs. But it wouldn't leave me alone, so.... 😂
This comes from @wacha's great Movie Title Challenge. I received "XX" as my title. I could have gone a lot of different directions with that. I settled on "double cross." And then "Double Cross Saloon" got stuck in my head and would. not. leave. until I wrote the song.

Lyrics
The Double Cross Saloon ©2026 - words and music by Sharon Stepler
Maybe I should thank you for the lessons you brought me I admit I was too slow to learn I paid with shame and heartache for everything you taught me That’s one diploma I wish I could burn
I know I’m not blameless in this ugly situation I saw all the signs that you weren’t free I willed myself to buy all your unlikely explanations When the truth was standing right in front of me
I have heard that love can blind you I found out the hard way that it’s true If she calls I‘ll tell her where to find you Hanging ‘round the Double Cross Saloon
You swear that you will leave her as soon as you can swing it You cross your heart, you give me your word But I found out I’m not your only dirty little secret You lied to me the way you lied to her
I have heard that love can blind you I found out the hard way that it’s true IIf she calls I‘ll tell her where to find you Hanging ‘round the Double Cross Saloon
It’s such a tired old story told far too many times By far too many stray tomcats like you Who prowl around with easy smiles and captivating lines So they can have their cake and eat it too
The Double Cross Saloon serves up cocktails of deception The bartender pours doubles just for you It’s not on Google Maps but you know where it is: At the corner of Cheating Street and Liars Avenue
I have heard that love can blind you I found out the hard way that it’s true If she calls I‘ll tell her where to find you Hanging ‘round the Double Cross Saloon If she calls I‘ll tell her where to find you Hanging ‘round the Double Cross Saloon

I really like the way you tell this story and I love the idea of a Double Cross Saloon! The lyrics of the chorus are perfect and you deliver the story with feeling but also not as a defeated partner, just one that is telling it like it is. I heard a different melody in my head when i read the lyrics, but this song could take go in so many different melodic directions.
It's a sad and bitter tale as old as time, but you deliver this with such sensitivity and, perhaps equally important, resolve, such that we feel like this lady is going to be OK. It's a hard-learned lesson, but the folksy guitar and confident vocals convinced this listener, at least, that as painful as the experience has been, this woman will power through and come out stronger. Also, the central lyrical concepts of the "Double Cross Saloon" is a wonderful conceptual hook!
Great take on that movie prompt! Yes, the 'cheating' theme is a tired old story, but you have crafted this well! I really like these lines: "It’s not on Google Maps but you know where it is: At the corner of Cheating Street and Liars Avenue"!
