Liner Notes

#lordoftherings #political #collab #countryfolk This little folk-country collab came about this afternoon, spending time with an old friend Michael C. who had done fawm once many years ago. He had an idea for a red state/blue state romance song, and we refined the idea talking about it, and came up with this little scenerio. I went ahead and started writing verses- Michael C made a few tweaks, and at some point we got interrupted, so I went ahead and recorded it, played it for him, and lo and behold we have a song!

I had to look up character names of Lord of the Rings, I knew the ideas of the good and bad characters were in there but forgot some of the names. Very quick live guitar-and-vocal demo.

Lyrics

Before I left my apartment I looked at my bookshelf Found a dusty old volume About wizards , orcs and elves

Walked myself to Cannon’s That old bar just up the hill Killing time and brain cells Like people sometimes will

She was sitting by herself that night With a book, not just her phone I used my best bad pickup line You sure you want to be alone?

Depends, she said, half sneer, half smile Showed me her paperback edition It was the same book that I was reading She nodded in recognition

The conversation flowed naturally, a fast-moving mountain stream I hung on and somehow didn’t drown It all felt like a dream

Till our boat of conversation Hit rapids and then a rock When politics jumped in the boat Without even a knock

this thought went thru my head All the way down to my toes How are you good with this guy Each day his evil grows

What evil? She said, you, you want to Tear this country down I think my leader’s strong You think he is a clown

How is this even possible She’s happy with a king How could she have been reading The Lord of the Rings

My favorite characters in middle earth Aragorn, Frodo and Sam Her favorites include Sauron Gollum and Saruman

The flaming eye, the dark lord Reminds her of you know who To mix fantasies, think about it In your heart you know its true

It goes to show the same book can leave different impressions before you go much further just ask the right questions

It really is bizarre how you can be having a very pleasant conversation with someone then you find out they have some intriguing extreme views... I'm guessing the moral to this story is never discuss Politics or Religion - I'm sure I could have had a nice chat with Hitler about his water-colour painting... 😀

This is so clever and engaging! Wow I love this. You really capture the confusion many of us feel towards…. sauron-lovers. I really love this!!

I love this ! I laughed while hearing the verse about "my best bad pick up line" and I absolutely love the verse about "politics jumping into the boat without a knock". I am not sure people whose opinions we consider evil really identify with the villains in books. Sadly, they sometimes love the same heroes we do, but we don't read the story the same way. But at the same time, the lyrics here about the characters are very effective in making us understand which side she is on. I also love the last verse !

clever how this moves on! ha ah you are being led to protest before you even knew it. very clever - cool song Mike

I haven't read Lord of the Rings, so I guess we'd never meet in the bar. Too bad!

I like how the story develops from innocence to a political argument. I'm quite confident I know the real world politician that you argued about and I think I sit on your side of the table

Haha this made me smile! Lord of the Rings is a good metaphor for modern times.

I mean it is so true about a same book leaving different impressions. Good protest song.

Quite timely - An interesting thought, that there are those that are "Team Sauron" - and think that's fine. Clever lyrics, Floating along on a nice jangly guitar. I enjoyed this.
