Sword in the Stone

Liner Notes
The rough idea for this was thanks to Mike at #filkhaven.
Lyrics
G Em You place your hands upon the hilt, G Am Of the sword stuck in the stone, G C Em Hoping you might be the one, Em D G Chosen for the throne,
G Em
But as you start to struggle, C D And the sword it doesn’t move, G Am You realize you’re not worthy, Em D G You had so much to prove,
But Merlin was a scientist, He’d often been to Greece, He knew that clamp and lever, Would control the sword’s release,
Don’t ever think the powerful, Would leave power to chance, Everything is carefully, Arranged well in advance,
And just as the sword in the stone, Used so long ago, The powerful still pull the strings, As small-folk come and go,
The winner of the football game, The duxes of the school, Your friend got that promotion, Not chance, don’t be a fool
The world it isn’t merit based, No one keeps fair score, The strong they scheme and stack the deck, They’re always craving more,
But what is the desire, Of the shadowy strong hands, That multiply like cancer, Spread across the lands.

Love this one.
Oh, how pointy these lyrics are! I llike it!
I very much like this one. Though I must confess, I do not know what Duxes are.
What is the US equivalent for best in a school subject each year? According to Wikipedia it is used in Hong Kong, Scotland, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand, so I’m guessing quite a few won’t get the reference.
It's a good example of the "Some things will never change" part of the human experience.
(I wonder whether a repeat of the "Merlin was a scientist" section at the end would work as a connection back to the opening.)
