A Mile Around
Skirmish: In your neighborhood (@longbat)Liner Notes
Lyrics
By the time that I was three I knew the meaning of a mile. If you had to walk it, it would take a while. And though I was a skinny boy, I always made it home. A mile was just the closest I could roam.
In 1880 this was on the edge of town. That’s why the block is a mile around.
Now, one side of the block looks like a factory town, Boxes put up in a day, but you could never knock them down. On the other side the mansions in Victorian style. You can see them for yourself but you will have to walk a mile.
In 1880 this was on the edge of town. That’s why the block is a mile around.

Here in the Prairies the land was surveyed in 1 mile x 1 mile blocks so I can relate! Nice lyric and the tune works fine!
Nice take on the skirmish! I live on the edge of my town (though it's practically merging with the next town over, now) and it's exactly one mile around the block, which I know was farmland gone to scrub forest 35-40 years ago. The line about "mansions in Victorian style" creates the perfect picture.
I lived on that same block! :-) The song is a nice nostagla tour.
I don’t think I’ve ever heard a song about the importance of a certain measurement, but I do love the concept!!
The steady pacing of the lines helps to reinforce the idea of walking, good stuff
