Do you want to be my neighbor?
Skirmish: In your neighborhood (@longbat)Liner Notes
I moved a good amount growing up, and even when we set down roots for a few years in Vegas, it was in a neighborhood where the townhouses around us were “low income” which meant that people were transitioning in and out of them rapidly.
Lyrics
G E7 Am D
A rotating cast of different characters Almost every day And I’m a little ashamed I never got to know any of their names
Different kids playing in the streets every week And I still don’t remember if they ever played with me
‘Cause it’s hard to remember anything from that time I try to focus on my memories, though they should be mine
Who cares where I grew up, ‘cause this is where I am now Even though I know that most people keep friends from their youth I’ve got nothing going on, cause I live in the moment, is that such a crime and such a tragedy Could we be something new instead of what we used to be?
A green sweater-wearing man said, “Would you like to be my neighbor?” And I said that yes, I would Even though I didn’t live in his neighborhood
I watched so much TV growing up That those people were more friends to me Than the friends I had, I can’t remember any of them, is that bad?
Do you want to be my neighbor now? It’s kind of a commitment that I can’t really make ‘Cause I’m so transient now Do you want to, do you want to be my neighbor now? I get to choose all my community It doesn’t really matter, geographically.

I used to watch Mr Rogers too. We actually live near where he held forth. Your Musical interpretation works well too
I actually would like to be your neighbor. 😛 So many great lyrics here and beautiful vocal lines, but my favorite is this:
I get to choose all my community It doesn’t really matter, geographically.
Because yes! Exactly. And I do think where you are now is more important than where you have been. I'm really feeling the transience.
The Mr Rogers vibe came through in the opening chords! I love the omnichord sound! Reflective lyric-- great skirmish work!
Heh, this resonated. I don't really have any childhood friends left from when I grew up and that always made me sad, especially when I saw lifelong friendships depicted on TV...
Beautiful sound, loving the tenderness in your voice.
Oh, you nailed that "Mr. Rodgers" piano sound. Lovely vocals, too. It must have been tough to be constantly moving as a kid. A very different experience from some of the other skirmish entries on this topic, but very relatable.
I’m inspired by the train of thought writing style. I’m very new to songwriting and am in a mode of thinking that all my lyrics need to rhyme. You have given me something to ponder…
Had an awesome time plucking along to this on my guitar! Very cool melodies! Great tune all around, especially those lyrics!
Great lyrics, they really convey a kind of wistfulness, but not sadness per-se. "Could we be something new instead of what we used to be" is such a great line
