That Western Road
Liner Notes
David is a brilliant songwriter from Tennessee who I've collaborated with dozens of times over the years, often with his frequent writing partner @vaughan_ray. I've never actually met either of them in person, but technology has been a blessing for making connections and even friendships between songmakers and I do think of them that way. Here's the latest fruit from our virtual tree.

THAT WESTERN ROAD Lyrics - DAVID L GRAHAM Music - JEFF WALKER
It’s work from sunrise to sunset A life I wish I’d never met Waiting round here for my death But it takes it all just to be fed
A horse can take me from all this But where else could a man fit And I can’t keep my life on this course I’ve got a gun, a saddle, and my horse
So it’s time for a grown man to go Time to hit that western road
That Western Road Might take me to adventure Or it might take me to gold I might be dreamer, but I know It all waits out there on That Western Road
So when that sunrise brings the day I’ll duck my head, and head that way Dreaming might be for a young man But I’ll dream big while I still can
So it’s time for a grown man to go Time to hit that western road
That Western Road Might take me to adventure Or it might take me to gold I might be dreamer, but I know It all waits out there on That Western Road
I’ll take what I need and be gone Survival is more than right and wrong Not enough here to live life long Tomorrow needs me to be strong
That Western Road Might take me to adventure Or it might take me to gold I might be dreamer, but I know It all waits out there on That Western Road

Beautiful song Jeff. Love everything about it. Gave me chills.
the western road is such a brilliant imge to hang a song on, and i like the fact that it is never defined in the song so it can be whatever the listener wants it to be...kind of like the abstraction of springsteens's thunder road compared to the definable thunder road of the robert mitchum song. i love these collaborations with jeff doing the music for and singing mctown's lyrics..and i notice there are a few mctown/vaughan lyrics out there just waiting for jeff to pick them up.
Thanks for listening in and the nice comment, Bill. Yours are always so generous and thoughtful.
Love the double tracking. This is a fun and relaxing song. I enjoyed David's lyrics and Jeff's delivery. So good.
Hey, thanks Mr. Matt!
Jeff, you have the perfect voice for country, and this song shows that in spades. Love your collabs with David, who's such a great lyricist (as are you.) I especially like: "Survival is more than right and wrong" and "Tomorrow needs me to be strong." The music feels just right for the message. Good song!
You are too kind, Patty. Thank you for such a nice comment.
I love your trio. You seem to have such a good chemistry together that I hear it in your songs. I love the vocal delivery here. So calm, so storytelling. You all got some serious chops
Many thanks, Ms Nadine. You are very kind.
Nice, smooth and easy to listen to. I feel like I can smell the saddle. 😊
Not recommended😁. But thanks for the kind words, Justin.
Yay Jeff is backing with those smooth vocals and great delivery. Great interpretation of David's lyrics. I get the feeeing I should hit the road and make tracks.
Thanks so much, Garry.
Thanks to all for the comments...and of course ..to my friend, Jeff.
What a great vibe feel to this track with vox and all the instruments! It just plays so well. And yes collaboration now virtual is such a blessing! Been blessed to work with a lot of people around the world, just inspires me more and shows the depth of human expression that still exists!
Thanks kindly for the listen and positive comments!
ooh "A life I wish I’d never met" conveys so much with so little. (I also like "Tomorrow needs me to be strong") And "that Western Road" serves nicely as specific place and as metaphor. The chorus is classic.
That's very kind of you, Beth. Many thanks.
Sounds like the wide open prairies! Great vocals, you really hit the mark! The lyrics are full of the classic stuff. That lonesome vocal melody is just great.
A big thank you, William. Appreciate the listen and kind words.
Yes! Lovely vocal delivery and the western imagery is just classic. Makes me want to head westward into a dream of adventures. BIAB is sounded great with the arrangement too. Great collab.
Much obliged, Dan.
Excellent, classic Western. Great vocal tone for the mood of the music.
Your kind comment is much appreciated.
Love the mood of this, wistful at the beginning of the journey, like each beginning is also an ending.
Really appreciate the comment, Mike.
I love your melody and lyrics!

Oh, I love that chorus... leading into the west! Great to hear the Jeff/David combo again!
