The Night

Liner Notes

Phew, spent way too long on this one. Partially rust (hadn't used my DAW in 6-8 months), partially experimenting with some new ideas that was struggling to integrate.

My daughter was struggling with her relationships with some of the other girls in her ballet class. It's a tough age, but it made me think about a very human tendency for us to see the worst in others and denying them the grace we give to ourselves.

Genre... uh... dunno, let me know what you think it sounds like!

Lyrics

I know that I’m fallen I know I’m the worst I know that I’m the enemy

Unredeemable Too far gone down the path you chose for me

Or so you say

But when you look in the mirror You see only light Does that make it clearer? And why do I Look like the night

It must be nice To know you’re forgiven After each of your misdeeds

Tell me how does it feel That you can move on From the pain that you’ve caused me

After every mistake you make Every step down the road you take Gets you back to a clean slate

But when you look in the mirror You see only light Does that make it clearer? And why do I See only night

Everything I’ve done Was all just from My moral failings All of my flaws

But that mistake for you Easily undone Temporary lapse Not permanent stain

But when you look in the mirror You see only light Does that make it clearer? And why do I Look in the mirror And see only light

Nice job, I'm getting post punk / depeche mode vibes too. Also, ditto your song notes, my daughter had friendship problems with her dance classes & it's been months since I've been in my DAW properly glad you've dusted the cobwebs off.

I appreciate that. Solidarity!

I like the lyrics and it is enhanced by the deep brooding sounds. Reminds me of Depeche Mode.

Oh wow, I did not expect you to stay away from music for so long, but you did a great job. I like the lyrics. They have a dark touch and I relate to them. Isn't that weird, when corporate culture is the same like school or ballet classes? Don't be shy about the wall of guitars. Turn em up!

Really good track, love the brooding vocals and the twang on the guitars almost harpsichord like!, perhaps some cathedral organ or pad synths in this one as well! Yeah hard rock metal. Almost sort of prog rock, but was never good at genre pigeon hole guessing lol!

I have a lot of prog instincts, but I couldn't identify anything specifically proggy about this one, other than some kinda vibe, maybe? I've been resistant to go down the keyboard rabbithole (I feel like I'm not even scratching the surface of what can be done with guitar), but I should probably just dive in at some point. Thanks!

No idea about the genre, but I like it! The lyrics are well written, and I love the interplay between the drums and guitars. Rock and roll! More please

I like the intensity and insight of the lyric and the way the song develops as it goes along!

@danb

I really like the vibe of the intro and the guitar part at 1:50!

Thanks, @grayland!

You know what’s crazy? I just uploaded a track with a very similar intro riff. Great tune. The chorus especially is brilliant. Nice work

Thanks! Just checked out yours and yeah, similar! The delay on yours is nicely dialed in. I held off until the 2nd verse for that.
