Liner Notes

This skirmish gave me an avenue into a humorous Star Wars song, so I very much appreciate it!

Lyrics

V1 So we’re in a garbage crusher, that’s the pits Floating shoulder-deep in grease and bits Of who-knows-what - and can you smell that smell? I gotta say that things aren’t going well

CHORUS 1 It could be worse, we could be floating out in space It could be worse, we could be sitting in a cell It could be worse, at least we got a breathing place It could be worse - I mean, we could just be in hell

V2 So we screwed up and our tractor beam’s been blown We can’t blame this on the Rebels, it’s our own How could we know they’d send a torrent of debris And smash our dish to bits - how could we even see?

CHORUS 2 It could be worse, at least we saved the ship somehow It could be worse - I mean, at least we’re drawing breath It could be worse, we aren’t in Vader’s grip right now It could be worse, he could be choking us to death

V3 So now I’m in here in Narkina 5 Working 12-hour days to stay alive They say there’s no escape; there has to be There must be more who want it than just me

CHORUS 3 It could be worse, the ISB could have my name And capture me to torture out the truth Of what I’ve done for the Rebellion, and the same To get the names that they’ve been seeking since my youth

CHORUS FINAL It could be worse, we could be anywhere but here And hunted down by those who wish for us to pay For all their problems and their worries and their fear It could be worse, at least we’ll live another day

It could be worse, we still have strings that we can yank It could be worse, we’re still alive and still aware It could be worse, we’re still afloat, we’ve not yet sank And we’ll find a way out of this, yes, I swear

OUTTRO We can find a way out of this mess, Find a way out of this curse Find a way to freedom, yes I tell you, it could be worse!

Haven’t finished Andor but caught the references. As a filkier, i always think the world needs more songs about the TV series and movies and books we enjoy and want others to find. And the catch phrase is a good mantra for much of our lives.

I'm glad you liked it. The show is worth it, by the way. I strongly recommend. :)

Glad to see you back on fawm. definitely have the sci-fi / novel / movie spin off songs on lock down.

part of the impressive part is that a song in this style with this theme has to be executed extremely tightly from vocals to instrument, otherwise the narrative slips and the narrative is what should be shining here. also of importance is the perfect rhymes and constant rhyming scheme which is also executed very nicely here.

i also really like the how the chorus repeats the title hook, which has an easy to follow feel to it, and is a great way to split up the verse / chorus.

i'm also a fan of star wars so feel at home with the story, even the ones i don't know somehow feel very familiar.

Thank you! So far, three of the five songs I've submitted are Star Wars filk; I'd love to hear your opinions of "My Imperial Career" and "Don't Diss My Pretty Ship." Good to see you too!

[pic]

This is BRILLIANT. I didn't get the newer series reference, but it fit in context and works well since "getting names" was referenced - if vaguely - in A New Hope. This is a great Star Wars universe song!

[pic]

Thank you, Cathy! I'm glad that it speaks to you even if you don't have all the context. (Go watch Andor!!!)

[pic]

Oh, that was great. I especially enjoyed the Andor verses, love that series SO MUCH. I look forward to this being a popular one in circles (I'd like to learn it myself!)

[pic]

The next time we see each other I'll ask you to sing it with me! (Are you going to be at Consonance or NorWesCon this year?)

[pic]

I'll be at Norwescon! We have concerts on Saturday but I will hopefully be around most of the weekend.

[pic]

Love it! There could be a thousand verses for this. I see it as a camp song - everyone make your own verse up :)

[pic]

I may try that at a live filk circle! :D Thanks for your comments, much appreciated!

[pic]

I recognize the context of verses 1 and 2, but the last one is escaping me. Is it from a newer Star Wars series? Anywho, fun references and such bouncy guitar! I wonder if this counts as cheeri-ose. 😜

[pic]

Verse 1 is the famous "What an incredible smell you've discovered!" scene from Star Wars (the original movie.)

Verses 2 and 3 are from the Andor TV series.

I guess it could be cheeri-ose? I thought "exasperated" was more the tone, but hey....

Thanks for your comments, my friend.

[pic]

Oh! Ok, I guess I was mistaking verse 2 for something else. Haven't seen Andor. I've heard good things though. 😄

[pic]

Oh, you so need to see it, hon. It is the best Star Wars ever created, bar none. One of the main actors said he temporarily forgot he was in a Star Wars show because the script read so much like a political thriller.

[pic]

I realy enjoyed this! The tune enhanced the lyrics, and I liked the "could be worse" theme.

[pic]

Blame the skirmish for the theme :D Thanks!

[pic]

Okay but the opening rhyme of pits and bits just makes me smile, and “floating in grease and bits” is so perfectly gross

[pic]

I'm glad you, er, enjoyed it. Thanks for the comment!

“It could be worse” works well as a theme. It’s hopeful in the upbeat, jangly rhythm and melody. Huzzah.

Thanks! I appreciate you.
