Liner Notes

For ages I ummed and ahhed about putting drums on it but stripped it all back in the end

Lyrics

Stay wary, they said
Of the human archetype
A parasite of life

Me, animal, nominally
That I am
I know where things go
And if I see you again
There’ll be nothing left

Of the girl with the looking
I won’t know until then
If your eyes are all wet
So keep walking

Human I make you
Passing right through it
And so on, and so on
I can do it for you

Though I’ve seen you again
We’re all that we’ve got left

It sounds great without drums, although I'm curious to see how it would have sounded with, too. Lovely melodies and harmonies, your voice has a very clear and wistful tone on this track that works really well with the simple instrumentation.

I can't remember hearing a song from the perspective of a dog before (although my memory is terrible) but this is quite beautiful. The plaintive delivery communicates an emotion that the lyrics only partially hint at, and the harmonies really emphasise the prettier moments, as do those lovely little piano flourishes and passing notes. Excellent restraint on the percussion decision btw.

There are some great harmonic changes in the piano, and the beautiful vocal harmonies put the icing on that cake. A delight.

No drums was definitely a good call I think. That up-front piano is giving me Ben Folds vibes. This is really lovely.. the sparse use of harmony is such a nice touch indeed. Funny that you were rapping so much last year, and then you do stuff like this... incredible really! You'd think you'd at least be shit at one or two genres but nooooooo

I really like these lyrics. You’ve got a great sense for writing something singable yet deep. Vocal performance and harmonies stellar.

This is really great! Love the piano underpinning but the vocals are really the star once again. The harmonies are lovely too. The progression and melody is up there with my faves of yours this year. Brilliant stuff - loved this!

Love the piano in this, and the simple shaker works really well on this track - the switches to doublespeed are good too. Some lovely vocal harmonies on this and great lyrics as usual. I really like balladeering French Cricket, it's an interesting change from your more frenetic compositions 😀

Gorgeous melodies and harmonies! Piano playing manages to sound beautiful but also unusual in that way you do so well.

Yay I back in the listening zone and what a treat for my little Thai based ear . Firstly your vocals come across so well and what gorgeous harmonies . The song is has an initial straight forward feel with the opening piano riff but my god it takes off into so many different places . Wow really glad you kept this as it is. Defo one of my fawm favs this year for so many reasons . 😀

Your vocals are really good here, intriguing lyrics too. Lovely piano goodness!

  • @alyxanderjames  Feb 27

I just love your voice. And this is beautiful. The stripped back approach definitely works here!

  • @mikeb Feb 27

The piano has such a hopeful sound to it (then the discordant part happens!), and the harmonied vocals really jump out and say, 'listen - this is important'
