Lyrics to Music #4
This is my fourth attempt at facing the dragon, and attempting to write lyrics to my own music (As a perfectionist, I fear lyrics). I’ve been forced to go this route and attack my previously un-lyricized, stagnant productions in light of vocal injury from singing while sick in the first week of FAWM, and my current complete vocal rest. The demo’s are from 2017 to provide an idea of what the finished whole might sound like.
This one's a bit reminiscent to (though very different from) Ed Sheeran's "Shape of You." As such, my working title was Eddie Shi Shi at the time of the recorded demo. Took a while on this one, but I'm glad it came to fruition because this one is just fun.
This one really got the juices flowing. I'm finding that the enormous amount of time I'm spending on finding near rhymes is developing into rhymes + short phrases then into linked phrases, and that this process helps my subconscious mind flesh out what the song's about, even if the phrases aren't going to be used. I'm also benefited in that it's improving my rhyming chops. Had to throw a good rap in there as the melodic rhythm was increasing beyond what was found in the demo in the verses, and since Eddie Shi Shi's prone to a rap. 😀 Oddly enough the baseball references kept popping up, so I ran with it. Last I played was in 6th grade. Really loved Angels in the Outfield back then.
At present, I think the verse will work like it sounds in the demo, but the end of the phrase will be spoken afterward. That spoken rhythm will be amplified in the bridge.
The Bridge works in such a way that each stanza dovetails with the next. How I love a lyrical dovetail, a pivot point which allows for two separate phrases, one on each side.
While I'm hoping to get to 14, there's just one more (completely unlyricized) song that I need to finish to feel like I've really accomplished something.

All these people hung around here (seein’ if it’s endin’)
As if I’m feeble, on the mound (can I even win it)
Curled up fetal in a pout (back to the beginnin’)
But there’s a sequel comin’ out (and man and you know I’m in it)
I moved the needle, went to town (and yeah they kept on spinnin’)
Pumped them ‘drenals in the sound (you know I pushed the limit)
Gotcha jumpin’ up and down (I really had you grinnin’)
All things equal’ll take a bow (I’m takin’ home the pennant)
Hey, Hey, Tell me what to say
Need a little bit more just to contemplate
With all these voices in my head
It’s hard to concentrate
Not insane, no I just need to take a little break
Hey, Hey, ain’t no paroquet
Could you get it done for me,
And that without delay?
‘Fraid that I’m about buckle
Underneath the weight
It’s okay, we’ll chock it up to my naivete
They say heavy lies the crown yeah (but now I’m swimmin’ in it)
You’re piling ounces into pounds (yeah I can count the digits)
But even eagles run aground (can’t always keep up with it)
But I can see you want it now so (I’ll dig deep and kick it)
Right now I’m drownin’ but I’m driven
Got a mile before the finish
Might be winded but my hand is on the plow, I ain’t about to give in/givin'...
Fingers all around,
Expectin’ me to figure out
One to three or up and down,
Is it too much to have a Minute?...
Made to question, wonder how
To think if this new play’s about
To bring us vict’ry or a rout
And then we wind up in a clinic...
Seems a thought you can’t allow
And taking time you disavow
But things like this get can profound,
So I’m a stop and form my own opinion
