Feb 23 richard-manuel-esque guy-with-piano
I agreed with Pearse that I would do the posting, but here are some of his words: " I got a lovely gospel-y Richard Manuel, may God rest his soul, feeling when I read these lyrics so I sat down and threw caution out the window, where it belongs." Amen!
It's a treat to witness my words become something augmented by another's spirit coming through them. I'm so happy that I've stepped back during this FAWM, because of the surprises that have come in to fill the gap. Thanks for this one, Pearse!
I climbed that mountain
yes I did
with you in my heart
and now it's time to come down
so let me look around
before I start…
I see the river I crossed
yes I did
with you in my heart
and I will swim back across
lie down in that moss
where we had to part
and there's the city I left
yes I did
with you in my heart
it doesn't call to me now
I don't see a way how
to make myself contort
I am not the one I once was
I'm not broken, battered, and buzzed
And I hope to stay on course
So I stay open… I stay open
I am not the one I once was
I've known love that shattered those walls
I alone can fight for this cause
I am not broken...I am not broken

Nice intro into that rockin piano. Nice vocals too
Such a positive uplifting message
Barbara..love the message of hope and resiliency here.
Glad you stayed the course this FAWM as you have gone through a lot of loss. Your spirit comes through here!

I loved these lyrics and the slightly gritty gentle vocal delivery is so perfectly aligned with the lyrics. I love the build of the piano and the evolving jazzy gospel feel. The ‘yes I did’ is such a great gospel like tag. Wonderful collaboration! I absolutely love this!!!

The piano hooks me (inevitably). And the switch from the open start, to the blues beat riff is great, not overstated or bashed, and the vocals are just right. And where's the dam' download button??? Not there!!!! And a sweetly-sad switch back to the slow free rhythm. Barbara, the lyrics are superbly strong. EDIT aha! got the download! Thanks!

The feel of this is fantastic! Bluesy. Gospel-y. Even a bit classical at times. I dig it!

I am not the one I once was
I'm not broken
Sigh
My two favorites, the hard feelings laid out for us to swim in and the soulful music and vocals to bring it all to life....sigh, what magic is this!!

Lovely collab. The transition from "I am no broken" to "I climbed that mountain" is killer. Spot on.

Ooh, lovely light blues-gospel touch, really brings alive the earthly things in this spiritual song. The move between free tempo and rhythmic is really effective.

So thrilled to hear Barbara's lyrics in a new vein! Very soulful delivery with early blues/gospel flavor. Vocals tug at the heart with clear delivery. That piano gave me Leon Russell chills.

Wonderful lyric, and what a treat Pearse has made of it. A pretty melody, and I love the changes in tempo. I can see too it made sense that he rearranged the structure. A fine collaboration, you two. 😀
