I started this as a simple jail song, then realised that at the Bridge I could turn it into a protest song about the 12 Catalan politicians who are currently on trial and faced with jail sentences of up to 30 years for organising a referendum on self determination. This is so obviously a political trial, indeed it is more of an "Auto de Fe" of the Spanish Inquisition than a real trial, since it is widely believed that the sentences have already been decided before the trial even began. They have been held in prison for 14 months without trial and are now showing in court just how unjust the Spanish political and legal systems (inherited from Franco) really are.
As the slogan goes here "It is Democracy that is on Trial in Spain" and to their shame the EU have been embarrassingly quiet about it, proving their commitment to democracy and human rights may only be paper thin too.
Visca Catalunya Lliure! Long live a Free Catalonia!
Time slows down when you're here in your cell.
Then slows further after you hear that lights out bell.
Sleep won't come as you hear your cellmate's snores
How I curse those reinforced steel doors.
Hours get longer when you're counting every one.
Only guess what time it is, from the shadows being spun.
How long is it now since I have seen the stars?
How I curse those rusty iron bars.
All we did was carry out the mandate that we won
But democracy is trumped in Spain by the baton and the gun.
Charged with rebellion when not a single shot was fired
Of all the lies they've told I am well and truly tired.
I am here for my beliefs, not for any crime.
How I curse the fact I'm doing time.
Fourteen months have passed before our case came to trial
Fourteen months of hell, but it has been worthwhile
One day we'll be free and our country will be the same
How I curse this Spanish power game.
